Norton Identity Safe / Vault Issues Persist

I have to say that the drop down window which appears at the top of the browser when you go to a web-page with a form is extremely ugly - huge fonts, no finesse to it - and talks about 'Which login would you like to use' even if there is only one login - no 'IGNORE' / 'CLOSE VAULT ' / 'DO NOT FILL IN' options etc.

Even worse, in Firefox v23 it can show up for a split second and then disappear - having completed some of the fields.

Whilst Norton Vault is very good for remembering your login information and meaning that you do not have to remember numerous login details it is fatally flawed for the following reasons:

a) It completes pretty much any forms whether they are a login page or not - text input fields such as 'title' can be over-written with stored username data for that site!

b) It overwrites fields which are pre-filled - sometimes when you first go to the web page, or even worse, when you submit the form!

c) phpmyadmin is dangerous to use under it - as it overwrites fields (such as a numeric id field) (!)

d) even if (under the previous Norton 360 version), you told it 'never on this page' - it ignored that and could still pre-fill information or over-write it!

All of this was reported by me as issues in Norton 360 (2013) - unfortunately nothing appears to have changed in the latest version to address these issues.

Re: Norton Identity Safe / Vault Issues Persist

Actually - I just realised that if you have multiple logins - on Firefox v23.0.1 although the drop down says 'Which login would you like to use' there are no actual choices shown!

Re: Norton Identity Safe / Vault Issues Persist

Oh - I see now - the options (where you have more than one login) appear as orange blocks on a white background (after a short delay) - although they were not showing at the time on my main PC - maybe because Norton was backing up my PC to an external hard disk at the time...

Again the options appeared in IE10, so I just thought it was a problem with the Norton Toolbar in Firefox.

No idea why there is such a difference in responsiveness..

Unless you cloned the two systems, there are no 2 systems that are identical. Hardware and software differences can affect responsiveness.

Re: Norton Identity Safe / Vault Issues Persist

Not very helpful - my main PC is a lot more powerful than the laptop, although it was the main PC which has the greater lag...

Anyway, after a reboot it is now at least showing the toolbar correctly and clicking on the valut is open does show the drop down in Firefox.

The problems with Norton Vault (or is it ID Safe??) completing forms and fields when it shouldn't persist and have been reported several times to Norton, but are ignored.

I just tried editing a database in phpmyadmin, and ID safe kindly over-wrote 3 fields with my username from the site without any prompt, or option to disable.  It overwrote 3 fields:

ID (an int(11) field)

UserId (a varchar(32) field)

TransactionId (a varchar(32) field)

This is why Norton ID Safe / Vault is so dangerous.

Suggestions:

a) Improve the look of the popup boxes at the top of the browser

b) Add an ability to NEVER complete fields on this site

c) ID Safe should ONLY populate fields after asking the user if they want them to fill the fields (same as auto-filling a form).

Re: Norton Identity Safe / Vault Issues Persist

Just a quick follow up to this - I disabled the autofill of forms from the ID safe settings (not exacltly easy to find - they should be accessible from N360 itself!) - and I can now use phpmyadmin more safely :)

However, the question arises as to why ID Safe tries to autofill these fields when autofill is enabled - with it disabled, it does not offer to do so (!) so surely it should not try to fill them when autofill is on?

Re: Norton Identity Safe / Vault Issues Persist

Autofill looks for field names in a page, and, if for example it sees a field for Address, it fills the address from its database. If your online database has a field that is in the ID Safe data, it would be filled in when you navigate to that page.

I have had that happen, but as long as I did not save the form, it did not actually change the information in the online database.

It may be different if you are using an online database program that may be set to accept all changes as they are entered.

Re: Norton Identity Safe / Vault Issues Persist

But so far as I know, autofill would not have anything set for ID, OfferId or Transaction Id in its database - that is the point.

Also, if autofill is operating correctly, then why, if I disable autofill, does it not ask me if I wish to fill in the fields in this form (as it does on other forms which ask for your username, or address etc)...

The issue is made worse if you have a table with lots of fields, so you can't always spot that autofill has changed fields at the top - plus, even if you overwrite the data entered by autofill, when you click on GO, autofill kindly re-inserts its own data yet again, so the only way of submitting the form is to either (a) turn off autofill, or (b) log out of Norton Vault, then go back to the page and enter the correct information.

Maybe the Norton programmers have never dealt with phpmyadmin - but 2 minutes effort would soon replicate the issue and show how dangerous it is!

Trouble is I reported this to Norton as an issue at least 12 months ago - yet still it persists!

Re: Norton Identity Safe / Vault Issues Persist

I am not familiar with how phpmyadmin works, but I see it uses a browser. So if the ID Safe is open, it seems to be trying to fill what it thinks it should.

Are the pages displayed from online, or local on your computer?

When you get the fields filling, do you see a Don't Ask at the top right of the ID Safe bar  at the top of the page? If so, try clicking on that to see if it will now ignore your page.

I KNOW - ITS SO FRUSTRATING. Which login would you like to use - but option except IGNORE. What's up with that? How in the he** am I supposed to find my multiple logins?

Re: Norton Identity Safe / Vault Issues Persist

Peterweb - I am accessing phpmyadmin through a web -browser, either Firefox or Internet Explorer - both have the same issues...

If autofill is enabled, there is no drop down at all - it just goes ahead and prefills fields with login information !

If autofill is disabled - nothing happens - there is no drop down on the page asking 'Do you want to fill this form' ?  This is why I think it is an inherent bug in ID Safe...

Looking at it, I think the issue is two-fold:

a) If autofill is enabled, then ID Safe tries to enter LOGIN details for the site... (normally the user name into various fields)

b) If autofill is disabled, then ID Safe sees the form and decides it does not need Fill Assistant (the 'do you want to fill this form' comes from fill assistant).  It also does not think it is a  login screen (as you have already logged into the site?) so does not ask you which login you would like to use

This needs investigating and fixing by Norton, but I am fed up of reporting it to them and it being completely ignored.
