how do I fix this please?
thank you! :)
Oh sorry...windows 7 home premium sp1 64bit os
norton 360 standard 22.214.171.124 / mbam free
It appears to be a Windows error rather than a Norton problem.
Your Windows 7 computer may have recorded in the Microsoft Windows Kernel-EventTracing log, an event with EventID 3 and Level of "Error". The description reads, "Session "ReadyBoot" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188". You may also see this error listed in the Overview and Summary page upon opening Event Viewer.
The logging of this error will not affect the operation of your computer. ReadyBoot is used by the ReadyBoost service that optimizes the boot time of your computer to a minimum.
but of all the useless things that windows decides to stop at boot why does it have to be my norton trace...
isn't that norton 360 scanning my system at startup? I WANT the system scanned at startup! eeeeek!! lol
FWIW, we have seen problems in the past with ReadyBoot (ReadyBoost) on certain Lenovo systems cause Norton to fail to open on boot.
Is it possibe to disable ReadyBoost? It is my understanding that the older ReadyBoot is no longer placed on Lenovo systems,. but ReadyBoost uses a form of the former ReadyBoot.
Does anyone else have more info, as I am not a Lenvovo user.
this isn't a lenova..I don't even know what that is.
It's an e machine...an acer. :) (desktop) I'm an old fart and don't do smartphones or laptops or any of that newfangled stuff the kids use lol
can't use the teeny keypads and can't see the teeny screens. hurts my neck to use a laptop so I've just got an old fangled desktop from walmart.
good enough for me and all I can afford.
what's a lenova anyway? lol
A Lenovo is a brand name - just like Dell, Acer, HP,Compaq. Lenovo's include ReadyBoot(ReadyBoost) as delphinium referenced in her quote - that's why I asked the question.
Can you please check Programs and Featurs and see if there is a ReadyBoost listed in the list of programs?
Hi yank! no there is no program listed Ready Boost.
I also have another problem...since october for some reason liveupdate does not update automatically anymore...I got an error stating that the dns server could not be found.
I don't know what that is. I don't think I have one on my computer. I've been getting those errors since oct, too. I've been doing my liveupdates manually several times a day.
today the cable company came and put in a new modem and was very rude and abrupt with me when I asked them about it. They said they don't know anything about the fact that my network map had changed now there is a (my computer0 -------a big question mark.......network 3 (their modem)........internet.
the question mark was never there before between my computer and the modem before. it's name is 'unknown'
I asked them what that mean and that it was never there before and they blew me off saying what does it matter as long as I have internet?
they told me if I had problems again they were going to charge me.
I feel like I've been kicked around by a pair of thugs
The tracesession error is not a problem. It just means that Windows has stopped logging, not stopped Norton. Windows limits the amount of logging as it would fill up your drive if it wasn't stopped. This can safely be ignored.
I am having all kinds of problems with my cable company. I'm paying for 30 mbps on a social security income and it's sooo expensive. everything is configured right on my computer I've run my scans with mbam and norton 360...
the techs from the cable company came today and they were absolutely horrid! rude and they jumped on my computer and changed a bunch of settings and cot into my command prompt and did something in there and swapped out the modem and didn't check the wiring or the splitter or the wiring outside
they wouln't listen to me trying to tell them what had been going on with my computer...when they set up the new connection, they 'joined' my computer to a home group and I don't have any other devices. it's just a desktop pc no printer no smartphones no gaming consoles no other devices...nothing.
I've been getting speeds that are terribly erratic...from 3 mbps to 40 or so up and down and up and down. no rhyme nor reason to it.
configurations all check out good and then they changed things and I don't know what they did and they wouldn't tell me they just said I should be grateful I have internet.
I'm still having the same problems as I had before but the windows network map has changed from:
now after they messed around it says:
I don't know what they did. they were rude and unhelpful and I don't know what they did to my computer but I'm having the same problems I had before.
also when I check the network security map in my norton 360 sometimes it say the connection is 6to4 and the adapter mfg is xerox corporation
and other times it says local area connection and some 'elite' group as the adapter mfg.
I don't know what any of it means but I didn't change it it just changes by itself and I don't know why.
I keep getting norton 360 blocking attempt by CONHOST.EXE trying to access different norton 360 files
they come in bunches like 40 attempts ...one every second or so.......then everything is okay in my security history and then there'll be another big long string of blocks again.
it's really freaking me out.
something is happening and I don't know enough to know whether to be worried or not....so I'm REALLY worried.
this is awful
here is a picture of my network map after they did something to my computer and I don't know what they did.
Hi, Paula. Still waiting for the image to be approved, but it sounds like they've hooked you up to a home network, which is fine. Don't worry about that, as long as you have internet access.
Re the CONHOST thing, thats just Norton blocking access to it's files. It's doing what it's supposed to do.
You are getting a bit panicky. Don't let the ocd get to strong a hold. Most of what you see is pretty harmless.
First off, we did warn you that updates might be a bit erratic due to the weakening cmos battery. This will not improve until it is changed. Changing your router makes no difference to that problem. Try to remember the battery.
Computer techs, repair service, don't care what we say. They don't have to know that much about it. They were just told to replace the router, and get it set up. Don't take them personally.
They may have attached your computer and the router as a home group to make your IP address more consistent. Hard to say, but it isn't something that is a problem.
The question mark just means that the computer doesn't have any information about the router other than it works. So it shows the router as a question mark or unknown device.
It doesn't matter who or what company made the adapter, you may have more than one that is available for use. Stay out of the device manager and settings. Not a good place for you to be.
Many, many things on the computer want to access Norton. Some are more stubborn than others. Not a problem. Conhost services a multitude of purposes and is a Windows system file. It has to be there.
Enjoy your computer, and don't let it worry you.
I am not paying to be hooked up to a home network. I am paying fifty bucks a month for internet access. they enabled file and printer sharing on this 'network' of theirs which gave somebody acess to my stuff.
not cool at all.
like I said, I unjoined this home group. I live in an apartment complex and I have some pretty nasty neighbors.
I get 700 bucks a month US I have to live on. fifty bucks to keep in touch with my grandkids is alot of money.
so Is 90 bucks a year for norton.
after rent and insurance and food I don't have anything left.
If I pay fifty bucks for an internet connection I shouldn't be 'sharing it with anybody
especially if it mean I'm paying for 30mbps and tonight I did a speed test...I'm getting just over 3 mbps.
that's just not what I'm paying for and I may be 'not right upstairs' but I'm not THAT stupid!
somebody's getting ripped off here...and I think it's me!
it's not a router it's a modem.
It's not wireless it's cable.
I already pay for tv cable and I don't have a choice...it's bundled into my rent. I don't even watch tv but I have to pay an arm and a leg for it anyway.
.....and why aren't I getting a low battery error or something if it's my battery?
I have one suggestion about your speed test.
The most accurate way to test your connection speed is to log in to your router and see what it shows. You have to remember also, that if there are others using the same site to test their speed, that site's servers will be busy resulting in a slower speed. Of course I can't say that this is the case for you and there's a world of difference between the US and Australia, where I am, but it is some food for thought.
I had a similar problem for a while and I also found out that when more people use your local exchange your speeds may be affected.
If you can post the make and model of your router, someone here may be able to walk you through the steps to check what the actual speed is.
It's not a router it's a modem. It's not a laptop it's a desktop.
no wireless devices in the apartment. No games, no smartphones no anything else. I do live in an apartment. I have rotten neighbors that have wireless devices and they are loud and use nasty language. I don't know what all they do with them. I just try not to listen.Sometimes I worry that they're using up all of my bandwidth somehow and that's why my internet speeds get so slow sometimes. I don't have anything wireless...oh... I don't except for a safelink phone that is issued by the govt. due to my poverty level and my disability. It doesn't have smart capabilities. It's just a phone. no internet capabilities no nothing. I get 250 minutes a month. I can't text because I can't negotiate the tiny little buttons. I have a hundred minutes left because I used them trying to get help from the cable company.
I hope I don't have any accidents or emergencies. Looks like I won't get to talk to my kids or grandkids this month. Maybe once for a few minutes. I still have to save some minutes for the doctors too.
the only reason I pay for internet is that I'm shut in and also because it's the only way I can see pictures of my grandchildren. They live a long way away. I don't get to see my kids. I have a car but I can't afford to go anywhere after insurance. It's for grocery shopping twice a month and for doctor visits. :)
I'm not complaining. (well maybe a little lol) ... I wish I could move back home (I was homeless before my caseworker at mental health got me this apartment) except my brother let me stay at his place for a couple of weeks first... that's how I got to get ssi for my disabilities. They won't help you if you don't have an address.... having a computer to be able to at least see pictures of my grandkids was a dream come true. I can't really afford it but they're growing all up without me. I miss my kids. I don't know what I'll do if something happens to my computer. It would be awful. just awful.
Last time I took the computer to a technician in town he charged me sixty dollars and all he did was download some software on it that I didn't want or know what they were and he told me to uninstall a game I had on it. He said he cleaned up some things on it but I didn't notice anything different except he changed a bunch of settings on it.
I took it in because it was freezing up. He said it was the game that did it. But he left the game on it and I had to try to figure out how to get it off of the computer myself. Just yesterday I ran a scan and noticed that there was a file with the game's name on it that was still on the computer so went to where it was and deleted it manually. (I had used the uninstall in the programs list to uninstall it but I guess it left stuff behind)
I play solitaire and mah jongg and a tile moving game that's a small offline game I've had for years and years on a cd. It plays good and doesn't use up alot of resources.
I play flash games online ...the little free ones at a kid's site but it's good enough for me. And I do jigsaw puzzles online.
I keep all of my software updated every week. adobe, flash java(I keep it updated but I have it disabled) and shockwave by adobe.
I have a webcam so I can see the grandkids on skype (I keep udated) but nobody else has a webcam so I unplugged it (I keep the software updated though)
drivers are updated
I have a list of everything I need to check once a week and I do it. I run mbam free scans once a week or more often if I get paranoid. (I get updates at least once a week for that) and do my norton 360 scans once a week or more if I get paranoid
I watch movies online, read the news look at pictures, check on information about my medicine and stuff
always go to norton sites that are okay to go to. mostly use norton safe search for searches but sometimes google and yahoo but not too much.
I don't know...that's about it. I'm a boring old lady lol. I don't go where I shouldn't go and I don't look at things I shouldn't mainly because I'm just not interested in all the crazy things that are out there lol
I just want to do my thing, have techs be honest with me and nobody hurt me.
this is a much different world than the one I grew up in. scary...very scary these days.
the internet is scary but I would really be crazier if I didn't have SOMETHING to do.
I hope this long explanation doesn't steer anybody away from helping me try to figure out what's going on.
I know Laura thinks it my cmos battery and I'm not saying it's not...but my computer is keeping perfect time......I'm just hoping it's not because that means I have to take it back in to some stranger and then they're going to change all my settings again and add software on here again (that they never even installed btw...they just downloaded a bunch and never installed it) and basically made a mess of my computer and I'm sure they had a ball looking at all my poetry that isn't any good but it gets the stress out if you know what I mean
anyway...the cable company supervisor said they'd send different tech over on wednesday to try to figure out why my speeds are so erratic.
thanks for listening. if nothing else maybe some of you will get a little insight of how it is to try to get help when you're mentally ill and can't communicate very well without coming across as....well...ill
Paula, no one here thinks badly of you. We are here to help each other, and that's why the forum was started.
Someone here, will have some thoughts on your situation, when they come back online.
Hang in there.....
Thanks F4E I'll keep checking back on and off during the day.
This morning my speeds are great. then they'll fluctuate and then by bedtime they'll be around 3 or 4 mbps but sometimes not
I have been doing speed tests and taking screenshots of them and saving them in paint throughout the day so when the tech comes he can get an idea of what the speeds are doing at given times of the day.
I hope he's not a brute like the last two. They had their phones with them and the phones were beeping on and off and my computer was making sounds and they were talking to buddies on the phone while they were doing something to my computer and when I asked them what they were doing they gave me a dirty look and said I wouldn't understand and to just be grateful I have internet. Like I said before, they joined my computer to a 'home group' they said I HAD to (never did before) and they enabled file and printer sharing on it . They also enabled media player sharing on it.
when they left I unjoined this 'home group'. they had set a password for it and I think I saw him take a screenshot of the password with his phone.
fishy fishy doings
anyway good morning and I'll check back in a bit for anybody that may be crazy enough to help lolol
Paula, re paying $90 for your 360 program. NO ! You can buy it much cheaper, say from a retail shop.
You CAN get it online, but you may find that too much of a hassle.
I paid $25 for my 3 user version of NIS.
Then all you do is wait a day or two before it's due, then click Renew in your Norton UI, and where it says "I have a key or code to enter", enter the product key on the pack, and you're done. Just be aware some shops will activate it at check out.
It's that easy, and way cheaper than renewing and paying $90 or so.
I am using a second of three installations on my brother's computer for him. He can't afford it so I figure I'm getting my money's worth.
With all of the horror stories I hear about people having problems installing from cd, I'd rather just skip that part lol. My brother is giving me a new pair of boots he has that don't fit anybody in his family for his half of the next subscription so I figure I'm getting a pretty good deal!
Thanks, though! Right now I've removed my card information and the auto feature on the renewal. I'll add that info back in when I get ready to subscribe for the next year.
Thanks for the advice though...those new boots are gonna be dandy! yay! just in time too because the boots I've been wearing for almost 30 years are finally going kaputz on me lol
Paula, that's the beauty of doing it that way.
If you already have 360 installed, which you do ! and a current sub which you do !, you just enter the product key and that's it.
No disk install required.
