134.57 MB update?

NIS2012
Vista home premium 32 bit

Just ran a manual live update.
Update size 134.57MB
Only two items in the update
Pulse update
2012 smart virus defs

That seems awfully larger have automatic live update on. So why would there be raft large an update.
Ran auto fix shortly after and got the fixed installation but no code or identification of what was fixed

Hi Calls,

It happens from time to time, usually when the pc is not on for a few weeks, but that's not your case.

As long as the large Smart Defs update is installed there is no problem and NIS will use the latest Virus database downloaded and installed.

So no concern about security for your system.

Regards,

Have you restarted your computer since this large download? Then check your Norton product version ...Support - About.

Is it possible you got the background download of the V21 of your product as noted here  http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Background-update-NIS-amp-NAV-20-x-to-21-1/m-p/1043099#U1043099

Peterweb,

How it's possible that he received the background update since in the LU logs it's only listed:

Only two items in the update
Pulse update
2012 smart virus defs

Unless he received a stealth update.. LOL...

Kind regards,

Plus I have upgrade to latest version turned off

It is not uncommon for LiveUpdate to occasionally replace an existing virus definitions set with a complete new set.  It is nothing to be concerned about.

If I remember correctly, when I upgrade my NSS from Comcast to version 21.1.0.18 I had a failed virus def update of 133.53 MB, but it updated when I reran LU - so I beleive that is what I also had - a replacement of virus defs and since it completed on 2nd try - I am not concerned.

I get these large updates as well. With my desktop, the system is usually only on 2 or 3 days a month, so it can go 2 to 3 weeks between live updates, but I also get them on my laptop from time to time and its on every day. Up until a couple days ago, my desktop was running NIS 2012 and the laptop has been running NIS 2013 for about 6 months. So given it was happening on 2 different computers running 2 editions of NIS, I never really thought mutch about it.

I would not even noticed it if I didnt just click the live uopdate for no reason. My  NIS updates are set to automatic, so they usually happen without my interference.

No there are two other things to this that are slightly concerning:

1. the autofix issue where it said successful installation even though no error noted to be fixed

WHICH I NOW TAKE THAT IR IS NO BIG DEAL

2. I have noticed in my live update history over the last week that Smart Virus defs have failed a few times.

NOW let me say the history shows that the live update will run again 5 minutes after a failed update and then show succesfukl completion the next time

The recurring phantom installation fix in Auto Fix is a known issue that has been reported elsewhere.  You can disregard it completely.  The explanation for the "fix" is here:  http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Toolbar-Norton-Identity/Get-Support-continuous-fix-of-one-Installation-error-in-NSS-v-20/m-p/1042731#M14985

Failed updates are typically due to a problem with the LiveUpdate servers rather than your local product.  You can usually ignore these, too, and retry updating at a later time.
