360 backup does not backup recent tax files

I noticed that my default backup set was only backing up my Turbo Tax files from 2009, and nothing more recent.  I finally figured out when I looked at the "What" screen and selected "Edit File Type" and the "Configure" for the Financial Files that only .tax2008 and .tax2009 are listed in the Extensions column.  No .tax2010 or .tax2011 are present.  I manually added them so that these files would be backed up, but I think it really should be part of the default extensions.

I am not backing up just files and folders, rather I am using the Default Set that is built into N360One type of file it will select for backup is "Financial Files", but the 2010 and 2011 versions of Turbo Tax files are not being selected

If I go into the "What" screen and put a check box in "Edit File Type" I can then click on "Configure" by the Financial FilesLooking at the extensions it is backing up, I see .tax2008 and .tax2009 but not .tax2010 and .tax2011 so the more recent TurboTax files are not part of the built-in default set and will not get backed up.

Hi,

How often do you refresh that backup set? If it isn't finding the financial files from the past couple of years it may also be missing other important files and folders that were created during that same period.

As an aside, I archive my older financial files onto a CD or DVD after about the second year to keep the drive free of data that I don't use often. The system has worked so far so I don't plan to change it.

Not quite sure what is meant by "refresh", but I am using the list of file extensions that Norton provides with the N360 product, and that seems to be missing the latest TurboTax file extensions (for 2010 and 2011).

You have touched on the bigger issue, which is that if the backup method is based on file extensions, then it needs to be correct (as opposed to a backup method that copies all the files under the user's directory structure).  Since there was clearly an oversight in not getting all the TurboTax extensions, it makes one wonder what else might be missing, and without a complete check of files you expect to be backed up versus what actually got backed up, it is likely one would never know until you need one of the files and discover it has not been backed up.

Since most customers that will use the N360 backup product will just turn it on and assume it works, it creates a bad situation.  I only happened to discover the missing files by accident, and now have manually added the 2 extensions onto the list.

Hi,

I never recommend using the file and folder method of backing up. There are just too many places it can do less than a perfect job. You have discovered this. The recommended way to backup is the whole drive and then incremental backups. I have mine configured to start a new full backup each month. If space permits it is possible to keep more than a single month's backups on file.
