360 Full System and Selective HDD Scans / How To Run and Frequency Preference

HI all,

I'm curious about the Full System Scan issues that have been posted here since I haven't seen the issues as yet on my 2 PC's.

I always run the Full Sys Scans overnight unattended and I'm wondering if other members are running the majority of their full (and/or selective HDD) scans with the Scheduler or are they being run "on-demand" when the PC is in "active" mode, with the user accessing everyday apps, ie, 'net browsing, e-mail, etc, while the 360 Scan is running.

I'm a relative newcomer to Norton, having first-time subscribed in Dec '12. Is there a consensus here about how often to run a Full System Scan or selective HDD scan on your PC's?

Assuming there aren't any problems/intrusions being detected by 360, do most of you run daily Full Sys Scans or weekly, or infrequently?

Do most here run their scans during the overnight hours?

Hi Scoop8

I run a full scan having five different on demand scanners to choose from, every two to three days but if I have surfed into what is not regular territory or I recognise some unusual behaviour on the system then I will perform a full scan after that activity.  The Norton utility runs a scan every day which when it pops up I continue to use the computer but when performing a full scan I do not use the computer.

Hi Scoop8,

It is not necessary to run frequent Full System Scans.  Idle TIme Quick Scans will run 1-3 times per day, following each virus definitions update.  The Quick Scan will detect any active threats on your PC that are running or are configured to run.  Full Scans will find dormant threats - malware-related files that exist on your system but do not pose an immediate danger because they are not active.  I believe the default is now monthly for scheduled Full System Scans.  If you think your system is at risk, you should look to enhancing the security of your PC by making sure that all software is up-to-date on patches, configuring your browser to run JavaScript only on sites that you allow, and taking other measures that will make you less dependent on antivirus software alone for protection.

I'll run a full scan once a week (just before windows does a system image back up). other than that, a quick scan at night before shutting down. i recently had problems with full scan crashing. Ended up doing a factory reset to the machine. never really tried scheduling scans. may give that a try.

Thanks.  I haven't had any PC issues that I have seen or are aware of, and since switching AV's to Norton in Dec '12, there have been no problems resulting from intrusions.

Thanks.

I'm not too concerned about vulnerability respective to the overnight scans so I might reduce the Full-Scan frequency on my PC's.

I guess I look at it as something that can run overnight while the PC's are idle since there's no impact on my useage with either PC.

I run a scheduled MBAM scan prior to the scheduled 360 scan each night.

Good advice on the browser preventative actions.  I usually have only a few daily 'net sites that I visit and the plug-in's are up to date, as far as I know at present.

One thing I've learned over the years:  It's been impossible for me to avoid all intrusions.  I've averaged about 1 "hit" or intrusion a year and they've all occured at reputable daily-visit sites.  Fortunately, none of the intrusions have been show-stoppers for me as some have been cleanable and with the few that haven't, I just plug in my spare cloned HDD that's always on the shelf in the event of problems.  Then I format the affected HDD, clone it again and put it back on the shelf.

Good info.  I might try that approach.

So far, I've not had any problems with the scheduled Full Scan.  If that happens, I'll probably try your approach or other alternatives.

System Image backup, that's good thinking :).  I always have a recently-cloned HDD available in the event of nuisance intrusions.  It's a good "peace of mind" strategy for me.

--> Thanks for all the helpful replies :)
