You may want to try the “File & Folder Backup” in Norton Ghost 14.0. It allows you to create an image of specific files and folders (as the name suggests). This might be a better way for you to manage your file backups.
I was using the "File and Folder Backup" for my data drive (Drive D). I was trying to backup old files that were originally backed up to DVDs. There were thousands of files because they go back to the late 1980s. I had transferred the files from DVD to my D Drive, then selected only those folders and not everything on my D drive. It looked like it was transferring, but then the progress indicator sat in the same position for more than three hours so I figured it was locked up. I couldn't even cancel out of it.
Frustration got the better of me and I trashed the hard drive (reformat) and got to thinking that this was a perfect opportunity to see if Norton Ghost v14 would restore everything back to normal which it did this morning. After that, I figured what do I need Norton 360v2 backups for unless I can backup to DVDs without compression. I wish the backup feature in version 2 was a little more flexible and had more options like turning off the auto scan and allowing backups without compression. So far I don't see it.
I am trying to remove old backups from the Norton Secured Server and have found in version 2 it is a lot more work than it was in version 1. I have to select each file from subfolders and I had found that 360 backed up a bunch of junk from from Documents and Setting folder with numerous subfolders. In version 1, all I had to do was select the previous backup name and delete it. In version 2, I am accessing this from the Backup Destination window as I used to do in version 1.
Is there a faster way to do this? I prefer to customize my backups in 360, since I can use Ghost to backup my C drive.
I guess nobody knows the answer to this so there probably isn't a solution. I ended up having to check the box for every single file (I did a Select All), deleted them, then tried to do a very large backup of about 8GB. When the large backup locked up, I went back in to see if anything was backed up. Guess what I found? All those worthless files I had deleted earlier in the day, and nothing there from my large backup.
I was so mad I uninstalled 360 v2 and thought I'd try out Microsoft new AV program trial. That was a mistake. After installing it I lost my internet connection. I got frustrated and turned the computer off for the night.
This morning, thanks to Norton Ghost, I was able to restore my entire system in such a short period of time compared to reinstalling everything. I've since disabled the backup feature in 360, or actually changed it to manual so it won't back up anymore garbage.
There has to be an easier way to clear out the backed up junk. Also I wish there was a way to get the program to not search for files to backup. This is how the problem started because I didn't select my Documents and Settings folders to be backed up.
