A couple of backup issues

Hi,

I have a few issues with Backup.

1) My backup drive is a mapped NAS drive.

2) After installing Norton 360 v3 I was playing around with the backup feature and created three backup sets.

3) PROBLEM1: Even when I delete a backup set in the 360 UI, it still shows up in windows explorer (under Norton Backup Drive). How do I get rid of it from windows explorer?

4) PROBLEM2: If I rename the backup set in the 360 UI, the name is not changed in the windows explorer.

5) PROBLEM3: I have one old backup set that contained large video files (2 files 16GB). Under Norton Backup Drive (and in Norton GUI), it still shows the files to be there. Trying to delete the files in either place has no effect. The files themselves are no longer on the NAS drive as the top level directory there is just 30KB or so.

I guess if I can solve the problem of getting rid of the backup sets from Norton Backup Drive then the other issues will disappear.

Is it safe to delete the physical directory from the NAS drive? I.e the ones that correspond to the old unneeded backups?

Thanks,

Hi Padma,

Many thanks for the quick response:

- For Problem 2 - I will verify this and report back - but now I understand and it makes sense.

- For Problem 1 & 3.

I created three back up sets. Set 3 is the final and the one I want to keep.

For set 1 - if I do right click -> delete - the backed up data is indeed deleted. I am just left with the "set 1" place holder in the Norton Back Drive - I cannot seem to get rid of this.

For set 2 - if I do right click -> delete (or delete from the "where" page) the data is deleted (I can verify this by looking at the size of the actual back up directory). HOWEVER, the backed up directory structure and files keep showing up - even though they are not occupying much disk space. They cannot be restored as there is nothing there.

The difference betwen set 1 and set 2 is as follows:

Set 2 was setup to backup selected folder F:\Data.

F:\Data has several folders under it - one being F:\Data\Video\Studio 12\Capture\{here are two large avi files}

After set 2 backup was done, I MOVED F:\Data\Video\Studio 12\Capture elsewhere on drive F:

When I attempted to delete the physical data of set 2 (via right click -> delete) all folders and files OTHER THAN F:\Data\Video\Studio 12\Capture\{here are two large avi files} DID get deleted. The actual data for the avi files ALSO got deleted. However the files still show up both under set 2 and in the 360 GUI in "Where".

It may be that 360 got confused since the folders it had backed up got moved?

Thanks,

PROBLEM1:  the N360 UI only shows backup configurations.  once you run a backup, physical files are copied to your NAS drive.  If you delete the configuration, the physical files remain.  If you're sure you don't need the files backed up on your NAS drive, it is safe to delete the contents of the N360_BACKUP folder there.

PROBLEM2: If you rename a set in the N360 UI, that change will affect the phisical backup files (corresponding to that configuration) after you run another backup session.

PROBLEM3: If the files are shown in the configuration, but not in the physical backup set, you can run a new backup session to re-copy the files onto the physical backup location.

Good Luck!

PROBLEM 2 - I will consider that solved!

HOWEVER, for Problem 1 & 2 I need additional help!

Please see the following picture:

The expanded tree is the initial backup set that I made (OfficePC2009). I cannot delete the files here. I have tried rt.click delete and from within the GUI. No dice! I tried to follow Joel's advice and created a new backup set with the same name. However, I ended up with a second entry (OfficePC2009) - not what I was expecting!

NOTE, that I could rt.click delete all physical data under this second copy ok. I just have one 'orphaned' data set that I cannot delete no matter what I try.

So PROBLEM 1: How do I get rid of empty backup sets. In the above example I need to get rid (so they do not show) OfficePC and the two instances of OfficePC2009.

PROBLEM 2: If I cannot get rid of the empty backup sets from the Norton Backup Drive view, then how do I get rid of the files and directory structure under OfficePC2009.

NOTE: If I look at the OfficePC2009 in the GUI ("Where" tab) it says that I have 16.8GB backed up in that set. This is not true - the actual directory on the backup media is just 14KB.

Thanks,

Hi binone,

You can try this out - Navigate to your NAS drive. You will find a folder called N360_BACKUP. That folder will have a bunch of folders under it, since you have more than one backup set. Each backup set is denoted by an id. Open each id and find if there are no folders/sub folders under it, if so, that is the empty backup set that you are seeing. Just delete that particular folder (with the id).

Now check the UIs/Norton Backup Drive and see if the empty backup set still gets listed.

Note : While doing a delete, please be careful not to delete the backup set that has data (because this is a physical deletion of data from the windows explorer. Hence Norton will not pop up any confirmation dialog). If that gets deleted, you might have to run a backup all over again.

Let us know if this info was helpful.

Thanks,

Padma

Hi Padma,

Yes! That fixes both outstanding problems!

Many thanks. These forums are great.
