Hello W 10 users,
Whether you choose the Upgrade or the Clean Install options, some things to consider:
1) To make sure that the activation of W 10 went ok, open elevated cmd and type: slmgr /xpr
If you see the script Windows (R) Core or Professional edition.
The machine is permanently activated, you're good. Anything else is problem..
Users who opted for the Upgrade option, now benefit of a W 10 Retail licence even if before it was OEM or DSP, very good thing...
2) After W 10 installation, you may notice that your machine run hotter and louder, pretty normal since Windows installs generic drivers, here is needed your "magic" touch.
Disable Windows Update for checking for device hardware drivers.
Install, first of all, and at this specific order, your Chipset driver, even the one used for W 7 or higher, if you have Intel, version 9.1.0 1025 and higher works perfectly. Reboot.
After reboot, your motherboard will run at least 7-10 Degrees Celcius lower than before.
3). Install your specific model, (Intel), SATA Raid or non-Raid drivers. It can only be done through Device Manager section IDE AHCI controller. Reboot.
After reboot your HDD'(s) temps will be significantly lower.
4). Install, through Device Manager also, your Firmware Extension Parser, Reboot.
5. If you have Ricoh SD and/or Memory Stick adapters, update also through Device Manager.
6. If you use Bluetooth, there is nothing available for the moment, except Lenovo W 10 drivers, if you use Broadcom/Widcomm software you will have to wait a little until a W 10 driver is released.
7) W 10 installs good drivers for Intel Wi-fi and Marvel Yukon Ethernet adapters, so you can keep those which came with the installation package.
Same for Synaptics mouse/touchpad drivers.
If you use Alps, then download a previous driver for you model and install the .exe in Windows 7/8/ Compatibility Mode, it will work fine. Reboot.
8. If you have Nvidia or AMD GPU, download a driver from their website, NOT Windows update.
Now here is another important thing, some of your previous programs, may or may not work as expected under W 10, keep in mind that sometimes, a program can be install under W 10 BUT the uninstaller is NOT W 10 compatible, you cannot know it before trying, so when you want to uninstall you will see a very "friendly" message, Windows cannot support the uninstallation, in that case, taskmgr, stop app running .exe, then C: delete files 7 folders, then cmd to delete any related services/dependencies the Registry to delete all related entries.
Hope you will not need it...
If you want to play older games, open Optional Features, and tick the option Legacy Direct Play. Reboot.
If Windows cannot accomplish that, then part of your OS is damaged, it should work without issues.
I'll come back later with more tips about Task Scheduler, you must take great knowledge under W 10, so most M$ spyware must be disabled.
Pay special attention under 2 Microsoft task folders, "Update Orchestrator" & "Windows Update", many things there have to be disabled.
Make sure to disable also sih and sihboot scheduled tasks, especially if you use a backup image software, those tasks are similar to "DISM online CheckHealth or RestoreHealth"... no need on a healthy system.
Good luck and enjoy!!
Regards,
