Only a partial reply -- if by Removal Tool you mean the Norton Removal Tool you can download from the Symantec website that is really intended to deal with removing failed attempts to remove, to clean up after a mess.

Normally you should remove either by using Control Panel / Remove Programs or Uninstall if it is a menu item in the STRAT / Programs menu entry for the application.

BUT -- current Norton applications will remove earlier versions if they encounter them when installing so normally it is not necessary to uninstall first.

I'd rather one of the Norton Staffers answered your specific question about the best procedure to follow in your case -- you can tell them from their names being in Red. It's complicated as to whether installing a purchased application on top of an existing one takes over any unexpired time or not. If you do a search in here on [Subscription] you should find a number of messages so read through them but note the later ones since some changes were made in what was stated to happen!

It would also be a good idea to say what version of Windows you have and what Service Packs you have applied since the two latest ones did have some undesirable side effects if installed while an antivirus/security program was active and protecting files!

Thanks for the help, huwyngr. You were thoughtful to take the time to write to me.

I should have reported that each of the computers that I own have been updated with all current Microsoft SP packs for XP. Mind you, the new notebook was equipped with Vista, but I chose to revert to XP on that machine. Considering that a Sony representative executed the task for me, I suspect that all is well. My only concern, however, is that the notebook may well have some remaining Vista files on its drive. Gosh, this situation is starting to sound more challenging than grading some of my students' papers.

Again, thanks for the help.

<<..... each of the computers that I own have been updated with all current Microsoft SP packs for XP >>

Note that if SP3 was installed while an AV/Security application was active it has been known to cause corruption in the Registry -- not just with Norton products. Symantec have a tool for this and a search for [XP SP3] or using the TAG for that at the bottom of a page will get you a list of messages about this including the link for the tool from one of the Norton Staffers, names in red.

I don't say you've got this but it's worth knowing about.

At least you are in charge there which is more than any of us can say about our computers .....

Here's what I would do:

1) Uninstall Norton 360 v1 trialware from that new system

2) Install Norton 360 v2 to that system with either the disk or the download

This should work fine. If you don't have any other Symantec products on the new computer, use the Norton Removal Tool if you like, although the uninstall should work fine. Thanks!

Hi huwyngr,

Thanks again for providing information regarding my issue. I am deeply impressed that you took the time to write to me.

I will perform the uninstall this weekend and then install 2.0 from the original disk. I will, however, keep in mind your warning about a possible conflict with SP3.

Your comment about me being in charge of students whereas the same cannot be true about computers is a hoot. Mind you, I believe that I am in charge of my students, but I suspect that some of them feel otherwise. Then again, I always tell them that I do not give grades. In actuality, they earn them and are in control of their destiny. Gee, and to think that before I became a professor, I cringed when thinking that I would ever say such things. Ah well.

Thank-you Tony. You were kind to reply to my query. After checking to ensure that other Norton files are not on the drive, I will uninstall from the program itself. I will only use the tool if necessary.

Once again, I appreciate the time you took to respond.

Have a great day.
