Accessing Facebook URL completely locks up my notebook for 30+ seconds

After a reboot, or when starting up my laptop for the first time each day, the first time that I enter the facebook url into the navigation toolbar it completely locks up not only my browser (Fireface 21.0) but I can't even click on any other opened apps like my email or windows task manager. Even my mouse is locked up.  i notice a URL loading at the time which is fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net...

If I close my browser after that, open it up again and enter the facebook URL the link opens in a couple of seconds.

Running Vista Home Premium SP2 (32-bit), on a HP dv6500 notebook PC, with 2GB RAM.

This is the only website that does this.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Could Norton 360 be checking what's loading on my machine and preventing any other access?

Hi,

Question;

If you wait about a minute after starting or rebooting does it still happen?

Thanks

Confirmed.

I waited at least 15 minutes after rebooting and the same thing occurs.

I even had my task manager windows opened at the time i clicked on the URL but it locked up as well.

Any ideas?

Hi Depo1964 fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net is in fact a site that the FaceBook photos are loaded onto.  I'm not sure why this is occurring - but the delay seems to me to be all your the photos loading.  Therer are alot of cuircumstances surrounding the  fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net on Google search - not sure whichone if ay applies to you - but you may be able to find something witha Google on it - knowing it has to do with your FB photos.

Hi yank, Thanks for replying.

Perhaps I wasn't clear about when this happens. When this occurs I haven't even entered any of my logon information.

This occurs when I type www.facebook.com into my navigation window and hit the Enter key. After around 30 seconds, that is when the logon screen appears.

How could FB possibly know, at this point, which photos to load?

Excellent question and I wish I knew the answer.  Do you think by entering facebook.com you are in fact being redirected to something else?  I just clikced on your www.facebook.com link and ended up on my facebook home page.  Have you run any malware scans (MBAM or SAS -both free) or even N 360 Full Scan?

I don't think so.  If I enter an incorrect password, for instance, i get notified that it is incorrect.

Perhaps, your FB cookies caused that to happen to you.  I use Firefox (Private Browsing Mode) which is supposed to delete my cookies when I close Firefox.

After I enter the URL in my navigation toolbar,  I go to the FB logon page.

Yep,  I've run both MBAM and N360 Full Scans with nothing to report.

I was hoping that perhaps Norton 360 was running some security checks on the fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net.. downloads to my notebook.

I ran akamaihd.net on Safe Web and it comes up green.

Perhpas testing it using Internet Explorer may tell you if it is FF related or not.  I have tired it with Private Browsing Mode enable in FF and it opens quickly in both IE and FF (with or without Private Browsing enabled).

Have you tried a Facebook Scan?   from the main page of N 360, select Tasks > Scans > Scan Facebook Wall - this checks the links on your News Feed - not sure it'll do anything or you - but can't hurt any.

I will try IE first thing tomorrow morning when I boot up.

Never noticed that Facebook Scan before.  Ran it and nothing bad was found.

This morning before entering the URL in my navigation window. i noted the exact time (to the second) that I hit enter.

There was nothing in any Windows Event Logs at that time.  The latest entry in the System Log was 10 minutes earlier.

Are there any analyzers available that i can start up and what to see what exactly is happening on my machine at the time i hit enter?

thx.

That analayzer question is not in my area of knowledge - perhaps one of the other Guru's or users more into that area may be able to help.

Entering the Facebook URL into my navigation window in either Firefox 21. or IE 9. still completely locks up my notebook for around 45 seconds. Is anyone else having this problem?
