Issue abstract:
dministrator privileges to run LiveUpdate manually in new Norton 360 app?
Detailed description:
My Windows 10 computer has received the new Norton 360 app. Now, when I run LiveUpdate manually, Windows asks me, twice, for permission to allow the app to update the computer (as administrator). How come? Admin privileges have never been needed before.
Product & version number:
Norton 360, the new app, don’t know how to find version # any more.
OS details:
Windows 10 64-bit, up-to-date via Windows Update
What is the error message you are seeing?
During LiveUpdate, “check for virus updates” phase, I’m asked, twice, for permission to allow the app to update my computer (i.e. grant administrator privileges).
If you have any supporting screenshots, please add them:
I have the same issue with a Win10 Pro and a Win11 Pro computer.
C:\Program Files\Norton\Suite\VisthAux.exe doeas not have the needed access rights.
The Norton Support knows a solution, but I was asked to pay for a Norton technical consultant, which from my point of view is not an appropriate behavior.
All: There is a misconception that admin privileges are not needed to run a part of Norton that isn’t being executed from within the Norton UI. Going to that directory on my Windows 10 Pro machine I instantly received a Windows popup from “User Account Control” for verification allowing the exe to make changes to my computer. That is normal. I am also logged into the PC under a full admin profile using Microsoft Account credentials.

I should emphasize that I get asked for permission to update the computer (UAC) even when I run LiveUpdate from the Norton 360 app (click Security, then LiveUpdate). However, I usually run LiveUpdate manually by right-clicking on the Norton icon in the sys tray and selecting LiveUpdate, which then causes me to be asked for permission to update the computer, the new unwanted behavior.
I’ve always kept auto-LiveUpdate turned off – I like to know when important updates are happening to my computer. However I notice from Norton History that LiveUpdate is running each day anyway, since the new app was installed a week or so ago. “Emergency updates”?
All: Check your UAC settings in Windows.
Conversely. When manually opening the file VisthAux.exe I do get an UAC prompt. I DO NOT get a prompt when running Live Update from the system tray menu.

So I have to lower my security settings.Thank you for your approach, but from my point of view this is not really a solution for me.
As a result anyone who uses the computer (e.g. my kids) can accept any install.
The previous version of Norton could handle this without adjusting something like this.
I want to have the maximum security possible. And I want to have a fresh update before I perform sensitive tasks like e.g. banking.
From my understanding only C:\Program Files\Norton\Suite\VisthAux.exe needs more access rights and everything would be fine. But maybe this would be dangerous and I do not have the necessary knowlege.
