Adware.gen

Hi,

I am new to the Norton Community, so I hope I have chosen the right place to post.

I have NIS 2006 and I pay the annual fee. I have recently found that on a full scan I get the adware.gen as a risk. I select remove but then get referred to do a manual removal. The adware does not show as a risk when I do a quick scan.

Bearing in mind that I am not technically great at computing and do not want to do something that I cannot undo is there any info/advice that you can give to get adware off my pc.Step by step idiot proof instructions welcome!!

Thanks

Andrew

If the Adaware program has real-time scanning at the same time as Norton you may be losing some affectiveness rather than doubling up services.  Two similar programs can cause security issues rather than prevent them.

You are able to update your NIS 2007 for free to the 2009 version, and use your existing key to activate.  This could solve the issue for you as well as giving you a better product.  Make certain that you have either NIS or NAV.

The file can be both malware and a false positive.  If it is in your quarantine or unresolved threats, you should forward it to Symantec  for their opinion.

Does Norton give you the option for removal or does it call for manual removal?  Definitely don't ignore it yet.

Please upgared your version to NIS2009. It is free for legit licenses.

Than run a full scan and see what happens

Please un-install the Lavasoft Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition as that has Real-Time Protection which will actually reduce your Protection as Norton as Real-Time Protection as well; the two Products will be Clashing with each other.

Below is a Web Link and Instructions on how to Updgrade to Norton 2009.  Please Note that is Updgrade will use your Current Subscription Remaining Days.

Upgrading instructions for Norton 2006 Products and Later:

01. Select your Product and Version, from the Web Link (above).

02. Save the Download on your Desktop.

03. Save your Product Key (www.mynortonaccount.com; http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/custserv.nsf/docid/20020610105504925?Open&src=symsug).

04. Dis-connect from the Internet.

05. Go to Add/Remove.

06. Locate "Norton Internet Security (Symantec Corporation)" and click on "Remove".

07. Follow the instrctions and, when asked to, re-start your computer.

08. Locate to Add/Remove upon start-up.

09. Click on LiveUpdate and "Remove" and any other LiveUpdate.

10. If requested, re-start your computer.

11. Double-click on the Saved N.I.S./N.AV. File on your Desktop.

12. Follow the instructions.

13. Open Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus and "Run [Norton] LiveUpdate" manually.

14. It is now Safe to Connect to the Internet again.

15. If you notice things not running right with N.I.S. 2009/N.AV. 2009, it may be a bug; please Post them here [in the Forum].

16. If you have Other Norton Products, then you can re-install LiveUpdate, or, if you have Used the N.R.T., you can re-install your Other Norton Product(s); if you do not have the Disc, then you can re-download it via the Trailware. Norton SystemWorks users have had a "Patch" Released so that Updates are received through Norton LiveUpdate, i.e. your Norton Internet Security 2009 Product.

17. If you have problems un-installing/installing, then use the Norton Removal Tool

Hi

A few of the AV products have detected this over a couple of years as say "Adware.Gdown"

Great! Glad to hear that upgrading fixed the problem ;-) Please don't forget to mark this thread as solved (green button) that way others know that it is closed. Have a nice day! ;-D
