Allowing Remote Access on Home Network since Dec 24 Update

Issue abstract: I would like to be able to access my main pc via remote access from another computer on my home network. I can only do this if I turn off the Norton firewall. Solutions in the support/knowledge base are referring to adjusting settings that I’m having difficulty finding find since the recent interface update.

Detailed description:
Under Security > Advanced > Smart Firewall, Traffic Rules Tab: I do have “Remote Desktop In” set to “Allow”

Product & version number: Norton 360 24.12.9694 (build 24.12.9694.895)

OS details: Win 11 (64)

What is the error message you are seeing? n/a

If you have any supporting screenshots, please add them: n/a

@newparade This may be a silly question so please don’t take offense but by chance did you check your Norton network setting? If Public is selected, my understanding is that remote desktop is blocked by Norton’s default traffic rules. Access is allowed by default in Private mode. (See screenshot below.) Even if you had selected Private, it might be good to double check. My Network settings get changed randomly by N360. No clue why it does that.

do settings get changed randomly when you’re Logged in?

Thanks @bjm Not entirely certain what you mean by logged in but I assume you’re asking if the network changes when I’m online. No. Not that I know of.

I posted the problem more thoroughly here. Repeat-------Be vigilant about checking your settings on v24

I shut down my computers at the end of the day and @JorgeA suggested that perhaps N360 may at times find a “new” network when the computer reboots. That seems like a plausible explanation for the growing number of networks that it created but that doesn’t explain why v24 decides to designate the network Private when I have the network trust set to Public. No prompt to let me know that it created (or recognized) a new network or to ask which trust level to assign. All happens silently. Didn’t happen often but required me to check the network trust settings after booting up each computer every day. Another annoying thing is that v24 behaves idiosyncratically. When v24 “finds” a new network, sometimes Private is enabled and at other times Public. I should mention that these computer are not on WiFi. They all use ethernet connections to the router.

It’s a potential security risk if unbeknownst to the user the network trust level changes. I’ve been using Norton for 25 years and have never come across a glitch like this. In any case, I rolled N360 back to the previous version on two of my computers. Haven’t had a problem on those since.the roll back so the problem for me is fixed for the time being.

@newparade I neglected to mention that you can enable RDP in a Public network. See screenshots below.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply, Puzzler. It does appear that I’m configured correctly, but I’m going to go through this and double check. Perhaps a general smart firewall reset might be in order.
