I have been for many years a satisfied and loyal customer of Norton security products.
I am currently using Norton Internet Security 2011 - Version 18.6.0.29.
Due to my geographical location in the Northern Hemisphere and my current location's broadband inaccessibility, I have to use the antiquated dial-up online option.
Since NORTON has changed the file sizes of the daily/nightly Run Live Updates, from around 4Mb to the current average of 120+Mb, I have been in the frustrating and compromising to my computer's security (via my NORTON Internet Security 2011) situation of being faced with what, for a dial-up user, are gigantic file size downloads.
I was able to do so after most gratefully receiving the valued and valuable advice of two of your Gurus, whom I have thanked and given due Kudos for their assistance.
I understand the company has done so because the fortunate majority of your customers are using broadband. Fair enough. But what are you able and willing to do to help your dial-up customers who are presently left in the proverbial lurch? Due to my ISP's rules, one has a session-limit of 5 hours. After a couple of hours offline, one can log-on again. And so forth and so on through the day and through the whole night until the next morning!
Since your esteemed Company's updating changes, I have had to load my download manager with 100Mb+ links and having my pc spend the entire day and night downloading these updates.
Clearly, an untenable situation and one that I most earnestly hope and appeal to NORTON to address satisfactorily for its numerous dial-up customers.
For example, yesterday I downloaded two 100+ Mb files and left the download manager to complete all the updates as shown on your relevant page. All up a total of some 15 hours were spent just doing that and leaving only small time-openings for attending to my other online activities. Using the single land-line for making and receiving phone calls is not possible while it is in use for the online connection.
When I woke-up this morning, I updated my product with the two downloaded files. I only remember that the second one's name that was downloading last night and early into this morning: 20110523-034-v5i32. I do not recall the preceding file's number.
Thinking that all was in order, I clicked Run Live Update only to find NOT a 1Mb IPS file but another 120Mb one!
When I went to your relevant download page, I found this 100Mb file that I am presently downloading: 20110524-018-v5i32.exe .
HOWEVER.
The unsolved problem remains this:
The daily/nightly IPS Security updates of around 1Mb-2Mb, I have been missing out on for over a week now.
Even though I have, as per your respected Gurus' advice, switched-off Smart Definitions and Automatic Live Update. The Pulse Update is still on.
Should that too be turned off?
So while one's nightly sleep interval occurs, NORTON is uploading its latest virus definitions and IPS updates. First thing in the morning is to update the program and then look in vain for a simple IPS update. Alas, it all for nothing! A vicious circle.
NORTON does not have an archive of IPS updates and the current ones are pulled after a while, daily.
Furthermore, even though I run the download manager continuously for two consequtive days and night, I was still had some 200Mbs left to download. Plus, the day's new updated file had just been posted and that too had to downloaded.
The process became expotential. Not only is not logical nor economical to run my download program 24-hours a day, I am now in a situation where I some 300+ Mbs behind, in my updates. And, no IPS updates whatsoever have been downloaded for over a week.
What am I to do?
My NIS product is not functional in the proper sense of its full usage and my computer's security is now compromised as the result of these cumbersome changes.
Your product which I have bought and have been satisfied with until now, is letting me down and, I repeat, is also compromising my computer's security for lack of complete and total updates, in toto.
A most regrettable situation indeed.
Please, consider mine and thousands (millions?) dial-up users and customers of yours plight and in light the company's renowned industry reputation for outstanding products and product support, I appeal to you to simply set up a page for dial-up users to also have those missing IPS updates.
Will you do this?
Perhaps these large files can be split into groups of smaller ones, say around 15Mb - 20Mb size and also have an IPS download page set up, that supports 'resume download' for download managers, as your antivirus file site kindly designed to do.
I and certainly more dial-up NORTON program users world-wide would be grateful and receiving the full benefit of their financial investment and trust in Norton Internet Security 2011, if you were to act in a compassionate, professional and timely manner to amend this unsatisfactory and compromising situation.
I place this before you with respect and hope that your company will help us out as it has been doing and will be doing for years to come.
Cordially,
WM
