Another curfew time limit problem

I have NSM 2.0.0.48 running on 2 computers.  They are both Windows XP, latest service packs.  My children use both of them with limited user accounts.  They do not know my passwords, and (mostly) do not stay on the computer all night.  The only difference between the computers that I can think of is that computer 1 is running Norton anti virus, and computer 2 is running AVG.

I have tested both of these computers personally, several times.  Computer 1 is not able to defeat the curfew time.  The 1 minute warning comes up 3 times and then locks the user out.

Computer 2 is easily defeated.  The user simply waits unitl the time is almost expired--3 seconds or less, and clicks the ok button, logs back on, and is good to go. (Sorry parents, I hope your children aren't reading this.) I am getting notified that this is happening, and do not have problems with false log-ins, as some other posters have.

I appreciate the product, and will keep it running because it is easy to monitor our usage.  Our family uses it as a safey measure to block unwanted sites.  It works quite well for this.  However, I have 1 really great kid that has no sense of time; and he needs the physical lock out.  Kitchen timers and parents nagging are just not as effective.  I think we all are looking for an unemotional, nothing personal bad guy to let our kids know when time is up.

Are there any patches or work arounds?  Thanks.

Just a follow up (I know I would have appreciated that 2 days ago).

I worked with a very nice tech yesterday for quite some time and my curfew blocks seemed to be working.  In other words, they tested perfectly.

However, last night when it came time for NSM to actually lock out the user, it did not work.  It did not even give a one minute countdown for the user to defeat.  I tested it again this morning, and the same thing happened.

You may save yourself some time and aggravation if you know about this bug.  It appears to me that if you are running Norton A/V, the Norton Safety Minder works just fine, but if you are running something else, it may have a conflict or two.

For our family... it's back to BigBadDad enforcing the curfew rules.

Hi maxwester,

Thanks for the detailed information.  It's a compatibility issue.  Please check out the link below for details.

Just another update to the other update:

NSM has been doing some things in the past few weeks that are opposite of our first curfew problem.  My son (the one who consistantly uses all, plus more of his allotted time) has been getting a "daily time limit reached" message and been locked out on BOTH computers.  The problem is, it is when he first logs on to the computer and has used no time at all.  (I must admit, I snicker a little bit over this.)

When I add more time to his account, we still have the original problem-posted in August- of him being able to defeat the curfew time, but occasionally NSM tells him his "quiet time" has begun and lets him go on from there.

Katie:  I appreciate the offer of a remote desktop, but I have already been that route,  curfew problems worked in testing, but not in reality.  Also, I realized after the whole morning of the remote was over, that all the tech did was uninstall and reinstall my program.  I had already done that also.

We'll continue to use, as stated before, but if parents are expecting to have NSM monitor time limits, be aware that even if it starts well, don't expect it to take over that chore for you.

Hi maxwester,

Thanks for the update.  We are trying to reproduce the issue.  If you are able to reproduce it consistently, please let us know.

You mentioned in your post: when I add more time to his account, we still have the original problem-posted in August- of him being able to defeat the curfew time.  Would you tell us what options you select to extend time "Until the next login or restart" or "Until XXX time"?

Thanks,

Katie

It is hard to believe that you cannot duplicate this.  I have had the same problem since you upgraded us to 2.0.0.48. This is a common problem that is occuring on both of my kids computers.  I basically have no time monitoring now, because I have to configure it to allow them to violate it.

Hi ajs6x,

Please uninstall/reinstall Norton Safety Minder to see if it helps.

Also, I'll be glad to setup a remote access session with you.  Please send me a private message if you're interested in it.

Thanks,

Katie

The very same problem is happening with my kid's laptop running Windows 7 and Norton Internet Security

It is hard to reproduce on her computer consistently though since it doesn't happen every time

this is how it goes when it happens

-------------------------------------------------

when time is reached the NSM window pops up and starts counting down 60 sec, 59 sec, ... if I click OK I get locked out. or it will lock me out automatically

after I got locked out, I log right back in and then NSM window pops up again and starts counting down 60 sec, 59 sec, ... I click OK and I get locked out

after I got locked out, I log right back in and then NSM window pops up again and starts counting down 60 sec, 59 sec, ... I click OK and I get locked out

after the third attempt like this, NSM most of the time now pops up another window - which then forces me to ask my 'parents' for more time. This window asks for parent email and password. No more 60 sec counting windows from this point on until parent allows for more time. This is I believe proper behavior of the software

But sometimes intermittently (though not consistently) instead of popping up the window for asking parent for more time, on this third attempt, it simply gives up and says to me that ' your quiet time has started, your parents will be notified' or something.
