Norton 2008 has removed the Antivirus XP 2008 virus, but my homepage was changed. I lost my background pix and screen saver. When I go to the control panel, and click on Appearance & themes, I don't have the options to pick a screen saver or background. Also, is it safe to email now that Norton says the virus is removed? I would assume it is.

I have the same problems.  Norton has supposely removed the viruses on the last scan.

Unfortunately not issues are resolved.

1. Internet Explorer does not let me change the home page or open the "options tab".  A message appears saying the operation has been cancelled when I try to open that link.

2. It also does not let you print Internet pages.  An error message appears

3. Additionally the desktop properties tab does not show tabs to change the screen saver or desktop

When looking up further information in the Norton library it says to remove some registry entries manually and refers to several keys with .... [random name].  Does anybody know what that random name refers to?

Hoping someone can help?

Please see the AntivirusXP 2008 malware page for technical information about the threat and removal instructions. At the time of this post, the definition for this malware has been updated yesterday. I would also recommend reviewing Orla’s post about this malware in another thread on the forum. Thanks!

I have continued to try to fix Internet Explorer and my computer Desktop.  So far I fixed the desktop which was missing 2 tabs for sceensaver and desktop on the property menu.  I corrected that by:

Go to Run --> regedit

Then went to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Looked for the entries NoDispAppearancePage and NoDispBackgroundPage. Changed their "1" value and set them to 0.

However, I have not fixed the Internet explorer problem.  I followed the steps to remove registry values outlined in the Norton removal instructions.  That did not solve the problem.

I tried reinstalling Internet explorer.  That had no effect.

The 2 problems I still have are 1.) cannot print internet pages and 2. cannot access Internet options on the tools menu. Anybody have any suggestions?

You could offcourse try a system restore to the time this all was working

When Antivirus XP infects your machine it clears out all restore points prior to the infection.

Hi,

My computer was infested with the Antivirus 2008 XP malware. Neither Norton's anti-spyware nor Spyware Doctor had any effect on it, but Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware did the trick. Their site is not easy to navigate, but I e-mailed {removed} and by following his/her instructions I was able to eradicate said malware with just a couple of clicks and five minutes' patience. Amazingly, THERE WAS NOTHING TO PAY!!!

I must say it amazes me that Norton itself cannot obtain this result, even though I am a fully paid-up subscriber.

Dave, can you share their fix?

Hi,

Here is the complete content of {removed} e-mail to me. I followed it to the letter and have not seen the malwware since:

Please download our program, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Paste that log in your next e-mail.

Let me know how it goes,

Yes, it is safe to e-mail, although I would Run a Full System Scan in Safe Mode, once you Update your Norton Product via LiveUpdate, if not already done so, to make sure all other Internet Theats have been Removed.

This Mis-leading Application must have hidden some options in your computer, un-less there are Other Theats on your computer.
