I just had a nice Norton tech spend an hour remotely diagnosing my computer, and finally he threw up his hands in dispair. Norton Security Suite just won't start. It used to start. It will scan when I start my computer in safe mode. But in normal mode, no joy.
I noticed this problem the other day, I got an email saying that something about my security had expired. I checked the system tray and noticed that it was not running, i.e. the Norton icon was there with a little red exclamation point on it. I'm a Comcast customer, so I uninstalled the existing NSS and went through the Comcast/Norton page to download the current version. After installing it, it would not start. I think the version is 21.1.1.
Then I ran the Norton Removal Tool, and the Norton Power checker, and verified that everything was ok, and reinstalled NSS again. Again, it did not start.
I booted the PC into safe mode late at night, and started a full system scan. That ran and in the morning was done, reporting no problems.
Then I uninstalled several programs that were installed lately, I disabled a "bunch" of services, and I removed a number of programs from my startup list. Per the Norton support rep's suggestion, I went to my video driver website (ATI, now AMD) and downloaded the latest installer, but it said my drivers are up to date.
Then I ran Windows system restore to reset the system back to a restore point (4/2), prior to the 4/5 windows update pack.
NSS still won't run.
Has anybody beat this ? Or can anybody recommend a good low cost alternative security package that works on their system? I'd rather not be "unprotected".
thanks.
