I am thinking of buying a new computer, but am absolutely lost as to wether I can transfer my nis.2011 to a new computer,
I have read some of the posts about this issue, but am still not sure what I would need to do, if anybody out there can explain this, in idiot proof terms, I would be very gratefully, I do know my product key number, Or should I just buy a new Norton disc and download that? Would be glad of any advice.

Welcome to the community ......and as Viswanathan has said ....you can install to another computer !
If you are a complete novice as you state in your post ...I have no way of knowing just how much you know about things in general .....So please bear with me if I mention something you are already familiar with !
If you are buying a new computer (either Desktop or Laptop ) ...it will doubtlessly come with the usual pre installed software package by the distributor .These packages vary as to what software they include in the package .......It could therefore have a Internet protection suite from any number of software companies already on board !
At this stage ...as we don't know how your new machine will be set up ...I can only generalize .
So firstly ...you must be aware that if the new computer comes with any form of Security utilities ...then in order to install your existing Norton product ...the product that is part of the pre installed software that covers the security aspect ....Must be completely uninstalled in order to prevent any conflicts with your Norton product !
This is most important as running simultanious programs that are attempting to do the same job...will result in "glitches and problems " that will prevent efficient protection of your system !
As you have not yet purchased your new computer ...it is a little difficult to know exactly what steps you will have to take ...and what exactly will need removing prior to your transfer of your Norton product !
You will get excellent support from any of the guys here when you are ready to carry out the transfer . For the moment though ..the exact steps you will need to carry out ...will depend on how your new machine is configured when you buy it .Hope this helps for starters ?
The license for some Norton products allow users to install the product on more than one PC using the same product key. Go to Support | Subscription Status - you will be told if you are entitled to install your product on more than one machine.
Have you created a My Norton account so that you can view your product status online? For example, when I click the Account link on the main window of my NIS 2011 and log in, I can see that my license allows downloads to 3 PCs (and reports that I still have 2 remaining downloads for my current product key) and there is even a download button I can use to download another copy of the latest installation file. On a brand new PC (i.e., without a Norton product installed), you can still log into your My Norton account from www.mynortonaccount.com and download the installer.
If your license only allows you to use your Norton product on one machine, you can uninstall your Norton product on your old machine and then download the latest installation file for NIS 2011 to your new PC from the link here. I think you have to contact Norton Support here by chat or e-mail within 15 days of the installation on the new machine to get a new product key and re-register your product, but I'm not 100% sure about this - your old product key may still work as long as you uninstalled the product from your old machine.

Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2 * NIS 2011 v. 18.6.0.29 * IE 9.0 * Firefox 6.0 HP Pavilion dv6835ca, Intel Core2Duo CPU T5550 @ 1.83 GHz, 3.0 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS
Thanks very much for your simple and straightforward solution, I have followed your advice, and I will be able to download my product to new computer, wish all explanations were this easy to follow.
Further to my previous post, I found an article on the Norton Support site titled Transfer Your Norton Product to a New Computer that has nice step-by-step instructions if your product license allows you to re-install on more than one computer using the same product key,
This support article won't be any help, however, if your license only allows installation on a single PC. In that case you're still stuck contacting Norton Customer Support so that they can deativate your old product key and issue another key for your new computer.
