Norton 360 LiveUpdate no longer works automatically even with it turned on in all places. Under the Security box, the last time LiveUpdate was done just keeps growing (hours & days) until I do it manually. I just wasted half an hour on chat with a Norton rep who kept saying that I have to do it manually and the pulse updates are doing it anyway. He didn't even bother to check my system. I have the same product on another PC and it works properly. The problem machine is running WIndows Vista Home premium and has all the latest updates. I even upgraded to 360 Premier, but that hasn't helped.
Can anyone help with this or is it a known Windows Vista bug? I tried searching the community and every reasonable suggestion, but nothing seems to match exactly or work.
My live update hasn’t done it for a while either just randomly stopped doing them. I’m using Norton 360 and when I used the flip over menu (Performance) side there’s a section called Norton Tasks where you can see what tasks Norton has performed for example updates or scans. You can use this to monitor the updates or even start the updates by clicking the icon.
The upgrade ran install automatically and then ran the activation and completed succesfully.
There are now 730 Days Remaining.
I have run LU several times and did a shutdown and restart then waited a few hours before running LU manually again. It does its three steps and completes successfully. I've done it again within a few minutes and had it come back with "Not Required" for updates. However, if I wait a couple hours or so and run it again, there will be updates. It just never will run automatically as it's suppose to.
Thanks for the suggestion and link. My LU still won't run automatically as it's suppose to. The logs verify that it isn't running as well as checking under the Security box on the main screen that says"
Run LiveUpdate
Definitions updated:
- and this counter will just go on and on unless I run LU manually.
It's a pain to run it manually all the time, and sometimes I forget for a few days. Just an annoyance, and it's my secondary machine. 360 works fine on the other one.
Hi customer_W6738 By and chance is your machine a laptop? Because in the Norton performance flip over you can go to Norton Tasks and from here there should be something called Expand I beilve it is? At the end of every task. From here you can choose tasks to perform if they’re on battery power or only perform while they are plugged into the mains. http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/Norton-360-Live-update/m-p/1099121
Here’s another link where I had a similar problem and will go in to more detail about what Iisted above.

Even if you run LiveUpdate manually every hour or so, you will probably get at least a pulse update 90% + of the time. It may just be your timing of checking for updates.
How have you determined that automatic updates are not working? You should check your Norton History and select the Live Updates from the drop down menu at the top of the screen. That will show you what updates have run.
Norton 360 keeps a log of updates. I can go to the "Performance" screen (flip side of main screen) and in the left column click "Norton Tasks." That will show when Automatic LiveUpdate, Pulse Updates, scans, etc. are run. The Last Run date/time for both Pulse and Automatic LiveUpdate will be the same and it will stay that way for days or weeks if I let it. However, I usually don't let it go for more than a couple days.
Also, the machine with the problem is a desktop. I have 360 on my laptop and can compare the two to see how they work even though both are identically configured, at least, as far as every screen and switch I can find.
Maybe I should be saying that "Pulse Updates are not happening" since the virus definitions are not being updated at all unless I manually run LU or Pulse. The switch for Pulse Updates under Settings is "on."
Hi customer_W6738 This is very strange but not a unheard of problem I’m not too sure what to say about it if I’m honest just very strange how it randomly stopped working. All I can say is on your desktop have you had any previous AV software installed before you got a copy of N360? If so did you use the Remove tool from the other AV software company’s?
I like to ask stupid questions from time to time. Is you system clock correct in regards to date, time and time zone (especially with the US just going on daylight savings time recently)?
Also are you ever getting any orange exclamation warnings?
Hi customerW6738 Sorry for the late reply! Been a bit busy recently. I’m not too sure what steps to take next if I’m honest. I would suggest using the Norton remove and reinstall tool but you may of already tried that. Hopefully someone else can post here and see if that would be a good next step to take.
Thanks for being patient I can tell this must be getting on your nerves! Regards
I doubt this will help, but please select Support and then Get support frm the maion page of N 360. This will run a check of your inatallation and may or may not fix something or present your with an error. This is intended for a starting point.
If no joy with it fixing the Auto LU, please download and run the Norton Remove and ReinstallTool. If that doesn't fix things for you we may have to do a more in depth clean up of your install.
Just too add my liveupdate has been playing up recently for example on the far left panel the green text counts to 30 seconds or whatever amount of time but never downloads updates with it. Because they don’t show up In the logs. But its obviously doing something because the text is resting so maybe live updates no idea why it’s doing it but just a little insight!
I finally got time to do a complete Remove and Reinstall the other day and have been monitoring it since. Everything is now working, doing updates and other tasks as it's suppose to. We'll never know what turned the old system off, I guess, but we know just installing a new, upgraded vesrion doesn't fix things.
Hi customer_W6738 Glad your problem is solved! I’m having the same issue and I did a NRnR and it seems to have fixed the error I’m still monitoring it for a few days to see how things go but it should be fine. I’m not sure why it did it either but these things happen LOL!
Glad to hear everything is fine! Take care! Regards
