Auto-Protect just stopped working

NIS 2012 has informed me that Auto-Protect is not working. I't says it cannot fix the problem. This has never happened before. Auto-protect is greyed out on the "Computer: Real Time Protection" page of Settings.

Error Message:

Norton Internet Security 19.2.0.10 Error: 3035, 6 Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium 6002.18533.x86fre.vistasp2_gdr.111025-0338 Norton Autofix Results: 0 item(s)

NIS 2012 has informed me that Auto-Protect is not working. I't says it cannot fix the problem. This has never happened before. Auto-protect is greyed out on the "Computer: Real Time Protection" page of Settings.

I've re-booted twice. A Quick Scan fails also.

For error number 3035,6 there's a support article: https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=v62458045_EndUserProfile_en_us&lg=english&ct=united+states&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Does it help to fix the issue?

Yes, my system seems to be secure now. My computer is exceedingly slow still (which I had noticed just prior to being informed about the NIS problem). Could this be related in some way?

Oh Wait! Before I sent this message NIS has just informed me that I have turned off Norton Anti-Virus (or something, I can't recall). Same error, and informed that there is no automated fix.

More Information

It seems it stops working when I sign in to Identity Safe on Internet Explorer.

Okay, just did a bunch of LiveUpdates. First one downloaded something and installed, but no change upon restart. Second Live Update also found something to update, but again, no change after restart. Third one found no updates. Fourth one did. Fifth one did, but failed to complete. Sixth one had a big download, 73 MB, and installed. Restarted and a seventh one found something. I have signed in to Identity Safe in both IE and Firefox, and so far things seem to be working. I will post here again if the problem returns.

Thanks! Keep us updated :). If it still happens, we can try out something else.

Well, the problem has re-appeared. My computer and NIS worked fine all last night and for several hours this morning, but then the computer got slow and sure enough, the notification popped up saying the anti-virus software (Auto-Protect) was no longer working. The auto-fix still doesn't work. I have also ran LiveUpdate many more times, most of the time it finds updates. This seems to make no difference though.

Should I uninstall the whole thing and re-install?

It seems this will be the only way :(.

Here are the steps:
1. If you use the feature, please backup your Identity Safe data
2. Download latest Norton Internet Security installer from here (this is the English one, for other languages please go to the Norton Update Center and select manual product selectoion + change the language on the site's top: www.norton.com/nuc )
3. Download Norton Removal Tool: www.norton.com/nrt
4. Disconnect from internet
5. Remove Norton Internet Security from Start Menu or from Control Panel -> Add or Remove programs
6. Reboot
7. Run the Norton Removal Tool, reboot (repeat it 2-3 times)
8. Install Norton Internet Security 2012 with the previously downloaded installer
9. Reconnect to the internet
10. Activate it with your old serial
11. Run Live Update until you get no new updates
12. Restore your Identity Safe data

You can check how the Norton Removal Tool works in this video.

Let us know the results.

Hi PapauZ,

I had already decided to re-install NIS 2012 before I read your reply. I did not do it exactly as you explained, but  just used the Norton Removal Tool and then re-downloaded the software from my Norton account and installed it. After a few live updates and restarts, I did a full system scan and no threats were found. I also did a Reputation scan and evereything looks good on my computer.

My computer worked fine for a whole day but this morning it would not start. It stopped on the black screen and told me something was corrupted and to insert the Windows CD and repair it.  After doing this twice, the computer finally started up. Apparently, it needed to do a registry roll back. I did not mention this, but this exact thing happened a couple days ago, just before I uninstalled and re-installed NIS 2012. A registry roll back was performed then as well. Now my computer is barely working, or intermittently so. I am now wondering if I will need to re-install Windows, if it lets me.

Question, could some sort of malware be at work here? Norton found nothing, and I have trusted Norton for 11 years now. But...

Tons of bad sectors on the disk I found. Fixed them, but Symantec Service Framework does not work now. I'm thinking a Windows re0install is needed. This will use my last download of the Norton product though :-(

Peanut gallery here,

If you are seeing 'tons' of bad sectors and having to correct them more than once it may be time to look for a new hard drive. Remember none of thes products [hard or soft ware] are designed to last forever. If you are using one of the better drives it may still be in warranty.
