Back up won't back up!

Back up starts but never completes, I'm getting 'Backup failed' and red X next to error.   In view details  get  There is a back up problem . Make sure the destination device is connected and then try again. New files backed  up: 0.  The files to back up are photos, videos and office files, in four sets  About  250 GB total. It s a new problem with an existing set

I can see the destination device (USB connected) files in my computer  . My operating system is Windows 7

Hi,

Can we get a bit more information? Operating system, type of backup [file & folder or drive/partition] source drive, destination drive [type format and size would be helpful] Is this a new problem with and existing backup set or a new problem with a new set?

Thanks

Many thanks for reply.

I've discovered that backup is turned off, probably due to having taken the computer back to a previous date, although it was only turned back a couple of days, perhaps this action upsets back up?.  Cannot find anywhere (and have searched & searched) where I can turn it back on.  Advice  please.

Have tried backing up again and  the message I am getting is  to log into my account and 'Activate online back up subscription', can't see how to do this.  :smileyembarrassed:

Still searching for a solution.  When I go into my account, do I have to download Norton 360 again? I am searching for an 'activate back up' only button.  The only 'activate back up' I have found shows 3 computer icons, but the buttons next to them are greyed out.

Can anyone tell me how to turn back up back on please?

Thanks.

Hi,

Is Backup greyed on the main UI?

If yes, click settings and on the right hand side make sure Backup has a tick in the box.

Dave

Freddies,

Try these steps:

    1. Open Norton 360's main client.
    2. Click on Manage on the right hand side.
    3. Click on Log Out located to the right. It is a darker grey color so it may be a little hard to see.
    4. Once done close Norton 360 and re-open it.
    5. Go back to Manage again and re-login to the Norton Account.
    6. Once completed go back to the main Norton 360 screen and click on Backup.
    7. Click on Restore Files.
    8. Click on View All
    9. There will be a link on the bottom of the next screen that says Refresh List.
    10. It'll connect to storage from there and retrieve the past history.
    11. Select the set and click Close.
    12. Close out of Norton 360 and give the system a restart to be safe.
    13. Once its back up verify if online backup has properly activated.

Many thanks for replies.

Have followed all instructions and all is now A  OK!

Isn't it easy when you know how! :smileywink:

This info was a good help in getting backup working again.  I found a link to reactivate backup when following the instructions.

the USB  has 500 GB and 250 GB free space

Thanks for the response jorger.

Sadly it leaves me undecided.  How did you get your 250 GB? Was it by using Windows Explorer or just taking the 250 GB you had originally quoted from the 500 GB of the USB?

The reason I ask is that sometimes N360 seems to decide to do a full new backup, instead of an incremental backup, and add it on top of the existing backup.  Thus if your backup size should be 25 GB it will run along at that size happily for a while and then go up to 50 GB or more!  I therefore wondered if this was happening in your case and the program had decided that there was not enough space.

In your original post you mentioned 4 sets.  I take this to mean that under "Manage Backup sets" you have four sets.  Is this correct?  Can you tell us why you have 4?  What is the predicted "Preview" size of each of these?  Do all fail to run or is it just one of them?

Can you retrieve a backed up file from the USB?  You might like to try a test restore.  This does not have to be to the original location if you are worried about possibly corrupting your current file.

I await your response.

Hello Andmike:

USB, 500 GB capacity, is exclusive to the N360 backups and the 250 GB occupied are previous backup files.

I have created 4 sets to have separate photographs (about 100 GB), videos (80GB), other files(50 GB), and more.

Trying to do the backup N360 pass  by each of the sets and mark the failure in each of them.

I successfully retrived several files to meet your recommendation.

I appreciate your help.

Hi jorger.

So if I understand you correctly, you have 4 backup sets, each of which has worked to the USB in the past, but not one of them will run now.  Is that correct?

Can I ask you to look in the N360_BACKUP folder on the USB.  How many folders are in that, and what is the size of each one?

Can you also try creating a new backup set with the "What" just being a small folder, one or maybe a handful of files.  Run the preview before it is run and make sure that the predicted size is under 1 GB.  Then try running the new set to the USB.  Then let us know what happened.

Have you changed anything on the device or are you using a different USB port form when the system worked?

How did you normally run the backups?  Manual, automatic....?

What version of N360 are you using?

Sorry about all the questions but I am having some difficulty in working out what may have gone wrong.  :-(

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Hello Andmike:

You are right, I have 4 back up sets, each o wich worked to the USB in the past, but not one of them run now.

In the USB there are 4 folder: 48 GB, 158GB, 3 GB and 22.6 GB.

According your instructios, was created  a new back up file  of less than 1 GB with no problems

No, not been any change.

I do the backups manually. While I have scheduled backup have no connected permanently the USB, what I do when I want to do the backup

Consulting online I got: Your Norton product version is up-to-date. I updated  a week ago, before  to run the backup

I hope that the information is it sufficiently clear.

Thanks jorger.

I remain puzzled.

You might like to try the following:-

Run the new backup set again and see if that has any problems. This is to check if the issue is purely with repeats.

If this runs OK, then I  suggest that you look in the N360_BACKUP directory again.  You should now find 5 folders.  The latest one should be of around 1 GB and will be associated with the new backup set.  Once found - delete it.  Then go back into Manage Backup sets and change the "what" definitions to match those of your current smallest backup (i.e. the 3 GB one).  Once set up then run it manually and see what happens.

Last point - with your current backups, which I know you run manually, what does it say in the "When" part of the backup definition?  Have you selected manual or is something else selected?  I am just wondering if it has tried several times to do a scheduled or automatic backup and found no USB and now it has given up...  Just a thought.

I await your reply.

I did but it didn't work.  I disabled the back up.  Will check again.

Hi aclorenzo.

Did you mean to post in this thread?

If you did, what exactly was it that you "did" but did not work?

Andmike:

I ran  the new backup  and run OK.

I follow your recommendations on running  small  backup and  presented the same fault, i.e. the issue is purely with repeats.

In the "When" part of the backup definition I selected  monthly.

I greatly appreciate the help me providing these

Hi jorger.

So can you run your new backup more than once?

Try setting the "When" on all the backup sets to manual, as that is what you do, and Norton will still nag you if it thinks it is too long since you last ran a backup.  And then see what happens.
