Backdoor.Trojan

I ran a fully system scan today and received an alert of a "backdoor.trojan." Nortan antivirus needed me to restart my computer to take care of the trojan.

It comes up as 00029358.tmp Backdoor.Trojan.

If it is now quarantined, is there any concern for this one? It reports it's extremely new (within 2 mins of my system detecting it) and only 5 users infected. Is it a false positive?

Please re-start the computer and Report Back here.

I’m sorry for being so paranoid, but are you absolutely sure the computer isn’t going to die? I’ve never seen a report of a computer dying because of this, but the fact that it has happened to me in the past makes me really nervous.

It should not die on you.

The re-start is part of the Threat Removal.

Maybe you could tell me exactly what happened the last time this happened that your computer "died" on you.

It was fairly long ago, so I don’t remember entirely. I restarted the computer, and when it tried to turn on again, it brought up a different screen when it was supposed to bring up the Windows XP logo and the loading bar. It was a black screen and it said there was a fatal problem and it gave 3 or 4 options to go about fixing the problem, but none of them worked. Our computer guy came and said there was nothing he could do. It seemed to be directly related to the virus on the computer.

How old was your computer?

Very old. I think we got it in 2000, and it had been running Win98 before we loaded WinXP in about 2003. We first installed Norton on it in 2008 and that was the year it died.

And how old is your current computer?

We got it in 2005, but it crashed in 2006 and we got a new hard drive. It was running at unbelievable speeds until about November of 2008. I ran the scan 3 days ago and haven’t restarted yet.

Please re-start your computer; okay?  Then please Report Back here.  You should be okay.

You could even follow thse instructions: http://www.symantec.com/en/uk/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2001-062614-1754-99&tabid=2.

Have you ever experienced a case where something like that happened?

When you re-started on the computer that died, was that after an Anti-Virus Scan?  If so, what Anti-Virus Software did you do the Scan with?

If you mean where a computer dies when re-starting, this is my first case I can remember of where this has happened.

It was after a full Norton 360 2.0 scan. It was the same exact software and scan that I did now.

One final thing, before I restart. On the Norton webiste, Backdoor.Trojan is listed as a Low risk. On the scan, it says it is a High risk. Any reason for this difference?

Threats' Level is made up of the following:

- Wild:

Wild Level

Number of Infections

Number of Sites

Geographical Distribution

Threat Containment

Removal

- Damage:

Damage Level

Payload

- Distribution:

Distribution Level

Once a Threat gets on to your computer, then, mostly, it will be Medium-Risk to High-Risk because of the properties of the Threat(s).

I restarted the computer successfully and ran another scan. All viruses were deleted within a second. Thank you for assuring me it was safe.

You're Welcome.

You could even Download and Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to get Threats that Norton may Miss.  The Web Link will lead you to the Free Version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware which has no Real-Time Protection, such as Auto-Protect, so you will be able to keep this Installed and use it as an On-Demand Scanner.  Just remember to Update it before doing a Scan and remember to also Dis-connect from the Internet before doing any Anti-Virus Scans.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware for Windows: http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?tag=contentBody;mostPopTwoColWrap&cdlPid=10997763.

If you purchased NIS on a CD, you can boot your computer with that CD and run a scan or boot your PC in Safe Mode (see Scanning for threats in Safe mode with your Norton 2009 product).

Additionally, you can install and run a scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

If you still have problems with your PC, download and run TrendMicro HijackThis tool and post the log here for analysis.

Floating Red - I do that every week as is... Just says to update and run a scan.

Vejdin - Downloaded Malwarebytes Anti Malware, works on uninfected sister pc, but won't open on infected pc.

Am running Hijack this tool now and will post results.

Thanks
