Backup doesn't recognize newly added external drive

New N360 user (as of a couple of weeks ago). I didn't setup Backup until I got new external drive (Seagate 500 GB).  Created B.U. set, preview looks good, but when I try to run I get error message to the effect it can't communicate with the drive.  However, "My Computer" shows the drive, as does Disk Maintenance Utility, and I have successfully copied-and-pasted a Word doc to the drive, so it seems there is some working connection. Any suggestions?  (BTW, running XP SP3)

Hi,

Let us know the version of Norton 360 you use. Are you able to see the external drive in the list of destinations under Backup settings? Also, let us know the exact error message you receive.

Im having a similar problem. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and both Norton Security Suite v4.0.0.127 (free for comcast customers) and Norton 360 v3.0 will not recognize my external hard drive as a destination location for my backup. I have a second computer that runs Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2 and I downloaded the Norton Security Suite v4.0.0.127 and the same external hard drive is found on the XP computer's backup destination. Need some help.

This may also happen if your Windows Management Instrumentation Repository file is damaged. You can try the steps re-create the WMI Repository.

1. Click Start > Run.
2. Type the following and click OK.
services.msc
3. The Services window appears. In the right pane, right-click  Windows Management Instrumentation service, and select Stop.

4. Close the Services window.

5. Navigate to the following folder from My Computer:

C:\Windows\System32\wbem

6. Delete the "repository" folder.

7. Click Start > Run.
8. Type the following and click OK.
services.msc
9. The Services window appears. In the right pane, right-click  Windows Management Instrumentation service, and select Start.

10. Restart the computer.

Check whether the Norton 360 backup detects the external drives in your computer. Let us know the results. If you are having Norton 360 3.0, try to upgrade to Norton 360 4.0. You can upgrade to latest version for free of cost.
