Backup files and folders taking too long?

Hi, I started to backup files and folders with Norton Ghost.  The total space of the files is around 500GB. I started to run the backup yesterday and it is now about 24 hours and it is still going on. The progress is showing 78% but I noticed that it is stuck at a particular small file for hours and since I don't need that file I decided to delete it hoping that it will proceed with the next files but it is still stuck showing this file. If I cancel the job will it take another more than 24 hours? I think If I use copy and paste it will take minutes but I simply want to preserve the creation dates on the files and use the backup feature.

I'm not sure what to do.

Is there some important tips and good practices that I should know about using Files and Folders backup?

Except a few tries with a few small files and folders this is my first real backup attempt with Files and Folders and it turned out unsuccessful. I'm thinking may be 500 GB is too much for Ghost to handle at once? May be I should backup in smaller chunks?

What could have gone wrong?

Three hours passed since I pressed cancel and it is still canceling or may be not? I pressed the Hide button and Progress and Performance window closed then from the tray I right clicked and chose Progress and Performance again and surprise, surprise, now it is not saying that it is canceling but still backing up stuck at that same file from yesterday. Next I'm going to stop the process from the Task Manager.

Well, stopping the Progress and Performance window process doesn't stop the backup process it still runs. I restarted the computer. Ghost left in the backup destination about 400GB of 200 000 files and 800 folders. I started the backup job again hoping it will somehow resume. But its been already more than an hour and the Progress and Performance window stay at Calculating remaining time and says "Scanning..." .

Is this all normal?

5 hours later Ghost is still calculating remaining time but every now and then it flashes that 74 hours remaining! And it also resumed backing up files. The Progress and Performance window right now is showing the folder that is being backed up. If I simply copy and paste that folder it will take less than a minute but Ghost  is taking so far about 40 minutes to go through this folder.

If this is Ghost normal backup speed I don't think I will ever use its backup features.

Does anyone know a backup program that can do fast and simple one time backups. All I need is what copy and paste in Windows do but in some way to also preserve the creation date of the files. Cut and paste preserve the creation date but removes the original.

I can't find how to stop a backup process other than restarting the computer. What is the name of the backup process in the Task Manager?

Just for the record, I'm writing this to include the end of the story

I stopped the process again by restarting the computer. Then following the proper way to delete backup files that will also remove the search database, I performed a search with nothing typed in the search field and the search took unbearably long time. On top of that Ghost complained that the search results are more than it can display at once. I selected all displayed files and chose Delete. After several hours the deleting process was still going on and I decided to restart again and delete the backup files manually which took only several minutes. The problem with this is that deleting backup files in this way doesn't remove the Ghost's search database and now even if I make a file backup of only a few files and search for them I have to wait unbearably long time because Ghost still searches in the huge database of manually deleted files. Last time I fixed that by reinstalling Ghost and I intend to do the same now, unless someone knows and tells me how I can clear the search database without reinstalling Ghost.

I will greatly appreciate help with this.

Hey,

This sounds exactly like my problem, but you were much more patient than I. Did anyone from Norton/Symantec ever respond to your questions. You posts, over 1 month old, apper to have come to a dead end.
