Backup not completing

My backup will now start but, does not complete.  It comes to the point where it says Transferring 125.6kb/125.6kb - completed-100% and continues to run and never stops.  Originally it wouldn't even start.  With the help of an online chat (Anilkumar) he got the backup to start.  When I asked if he had to do something to make it start... he replied "not exactly".  After ending the chat, I realized it looks like it runs to completion but, does not end.  I have to cancel it.  This problem began, when I renewed and upgraded to version 5.  I never had a problem before this.  Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate the online chat.  Help!

Welcome,

You are having problems since the upgrade. What was the previous program? And how was it removed prior to the installation of the current version?

My thought is that the installation of the new was over the existing and may not have gotten all of its bits in order. The short solution is to remove the programs via the control panel and reinstall the current version. The longer solution requires downloading the Norton Removal Tool and running it first, rebooting and then doing an install of the new version.

Hope this helps

PS: if you get to the first 'Nathan' page look all the way down at the bottom of the page in the right corner for 'contact us' and click on it :smileywink:

If I uninstall via the control panel will I lose all of my Norton settings and in particular the file definitions that I defined for the default backup set?  I really didn't want to have to redefine them.  My backup is now doing what it originally did....begin, determine all the files to backup, start to run and never get beyond 0% complete and never finishes.  I am very frustrated with this.  I will try to contact them again using the contact us at the bottom of Nathan.  Thanks so much for the assistance.... keep the ideas flowing...

A Norton analyst helped me today.  They built a new back-up set and ran it without a problem.  Her take on it was that my previous default configuration set was corrupted.  So, she included the world in a new configuration set and now I have to go through it and eliminate all the files that I do not want to backup, which is probably the majority.  Otherwise, I will blow right by the 2GB.  I am going to try and see if it runs to completion.  I am afraid that I don't buy this resolution.  Let's see before I uninstall and reinstall.

I have resolved this.  :smileyhappy: no thanks to the support of the chat room analysts.  It would probably help if they were located in this part of the world and had English as their first language.  They appear to speak good English but, clearly do not fully understand the language.  We will never relly know what happened to my original default set that stopped working.  I found that when you create a new backup set, it saves everything in the new set whether or not it is already backed-up.  So, when i created a new backup set with everything that was in the original backup and ran the backup, I ran out of storage!  How to delete the original and the backup set that the Norton analyst created.....I asked online "Nathan" and believe it or not he told me.  Suddenly I have more than adequate storage.  I changed one of the files in my good backup set and reran backup and guess what?  It worked and i was no longer out of storage.  I have learned a lot about the backup process.  So, don't hesitate to ask me questions.  I only back up designated files on my C drive and do not use their default folders that save everything in the world and cause you to run out of storage quickly.  Good luck!

Please remove my last post.  I don't think my comment about language is appropriate.  My apologies.....

I, too, had a problem with my Norton 360 backup not completing. What finally worked for me was 1) temporarily disabling the Windows weekly backup I had setup, and 2) creating a new DefaultSet. I also thought that my first DefaultSet had become corrupted because I added a second external USB drive and, after unplugging it, Norton 360 could no longer find my original USB external drive that I used for Norton 360 backups.

When I first decided I would create a new DefaultSet, I 'deleted' the DefaultSet I had originally setup. To my surprise, it deleted everything in the 'container' but left the container. Fortunately, I was able to rename it to something else and then create a new backup named 'DefaultSet'. It is now working fine.

Don't stress over the English comment. I know such things are not 'politically correct' but I have seen complaints about the customer service language problems for several years now and have experienced the frustration myself. But I also give them great credit for attempting to learn a second (or third) language. It's ok ... and please feel welcome to come read in the forum and post with any problems you might have with Norton.

Hey lechat,

I am very glad that you have resolved your issue and have apparently learned a lot on a quick learning curve about the backup feature and how it works :)

In the future if you have something that you'd need to change you get a specified amount of time to edit your message (something like a half hour or hour?).

I don't know if a language barrier is the main issue. I've used the live chat via the computer and had a great struggle with some rep's to understand the issue at hand or what needed to be done.

I would like to add however that I have had communications with people that are rep's through this forum that have gone out of their way to try and help. Even so much as communicating with me outside of physically being at work. So I am not trying to infer anything but rather stating that I think I understand what you are saying.

Take care,

lechat, If you wish you can mark your message (or any, of course of your choosing) that shows how you fixed your issue as it may help someone with the same predicament.

Take care and thank you for sharing that information!

Thank you everyone for your kind replies.  I would like to share some of the things that I have learned about the Norton backup.  Those of you who are more experienced than me and use it more extensively probably already know this information.  First, I really love the Norton system and constantly recommend it.  I have found that it really keeps my computer running faster and cleaner.  I literally run a comprehensive scan almost daily.  I am convinced that it really makes a difference in the operation and performance of my computer.

Recently after installing the newest version that became available, after renewing my subscription, I noticed that my backup would start, identify the files from my default backup set and begin running.  However, it would not make any progress beyond 0% complete and obviously would never finish.  After a couple sessiions with a couple different Norton analysts, they determined that my default backup set was probably corrupted and I needed to create a new one.  I did this under a new set name.  When I ran it, it would complete but, tell me that I had insufficient storage, which made no sense to me.  I was backing-up 542 files - 998.6 MB into 2GB of storage.  Why would I run out of storage?  After extensive investigation, I realized that all the backups from my original set was consuming the online storage.  I tried everything to see what all was out there and tried to figure out how to purge everything from the online storage and start the backup from scratch.  Nathan helped me here....  Using Windows explorer or my computer find the "Norton defined drives" that correspond to each back-up set and delete them.  It goes out and clears the online backup storage.  Then build the new backup set and run the backup.  Consequently I had more than adequate storage.  When I originally began working with the backup I was confused by the fact that it may only backup 1 file or 0 files.  After some lengthy discussions with a Norton analyst I discovered that it will only backup a file if it has changes....obviously a very good idea.

I became a little agitated regarding rebuilding the backup set.  The Norton analyst said just check the box for pictures, documents, etc and just delete the files I don't want back-up.  This is ludicrous because it will identify about 8000 files of which I may only want to backup 542 files.  Needless to say it is much easier to only check the C drive and manually identify specific folders & files for backup.  This irritated me a bit because I had to re-investigate where all these files reside.  I manually backup my Outlook contacts file and it is challenging to find the name & location of that file.  For your information the name of the Outlook contacts file in Office 2007 - Windows Vista - is Outlook.pst.  The location is C:\users\your admin name\Appdata\local\Microsoft\ .  Some of these folders may be hidden so you may need to navigate to them and unhide them.  Google search will assist you with locating some of the Microsoft files.  Hope this information is useful.

Thank you. Your message is useful information.

In return may I provide you with a possible help. Microsoft has a small utility which does a great job of backing up just your .pst file to the location of your choice. I use it to keep email messages separated from the larger main drive backups. Makes it easier for me to fine messages among the gigabytes of backup files :smileywink:
