Backup not done recently message

I am having a problem doing backups the way I want to do them.  I want to do them manually.  I use two USB connected external drives for backups, one for a daily backup set and the other for the same daily backup set plus a new weekly backup set with a new name each week leaving the older weekly backups sets in place.  After I do the backups, I disconnect the drives from my laptop.  Sometimes when I try to open “Device Security” to do the backups, I get a message that a backup has not been done recently and the only choice I am given is “Fix It”.  “Fix It” runs all my backup sets all of which are set to be run manually. The technician worked a long time while remotely connected to my computer.  He seemed knowledgeable and put forth a great deal of effort, before telling me he was setting an appointment for someone to call me the next day.  That did not happen.  Bottom line is I still have the problem and Norton have a unhappy customer.
