KiwiBob,

In order to backup to a network location with Norton 360 you will need to create a mapped network drive to the area you would like to backup to.

for help creating a mapped network drive see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/maintain/mapdrive.mspx

Let me know how it works out,

Regards,

Adam

Hi Tyler,

Sorry for the delay in responding

1 Computer A is running XP professional v 5.1 SP3. This machine has an external HDD (E drive) which is used for backups from this machine. It also has a printer connected to it.

Computer B is running XP Home edition v 5.1 SP2

2 The machines are connected through a D-Link DSL504G router

3 As far as I know file sharing provisions are set up on both computers. Each machine can view shared  files on the other (still can) and machine B prints to the printer connected to A

4  When I go to the N360 main page and click on "MY Network" then to "Network Map" I get the message "Norton 360 is unable to probe your network etc...." The same message appears on when I attempt this on both machines.

Hi Adam

Mapped Network Drives are new terminology to me. Can I assume that, given the external HDD on machine A is identified in "My Computer" as drive E that it is "mapped"?

I hope this information is enough to let you guide me from here. If not let me know what else you need to know.

kiwibob,

a mapped network drive is when you create a drive on your machine (machine b in this case) that points to a shared folder on another computer.  the following link should help you get this set up:

Solved it.

A "Mapped Network Drive" is something that the initiated know all about and probably think those who don't are somewhat deficient in their basic comprehension of life.

Be that as it may, Mapped Network Drive might as well have been gobbledygook to me. The I realized I already had some on computer A and all I had to do was establish one on computer B that had its end point in a folder on the external HDD connected to A.

So I did that. Backup now working as I want it to.

I have recently purchased Norton 360 and installed it on two computers, both running XP, linked in a home network. Computer A has an external HDD and I have the computer automatically backing up to an external HDD (E drive). Absouletly great. For the first time I have backups under control.

I want to set up computer B  to back up the external HDD linked to A. Whever I try to click on "My Network" then try to map the network i get this message that says "Norton 360 is unable to probe your network... etc" I have tried all the things that a non-geek should, and probably shouldn't, such as trying to put in an address for a trusted link or whatever it is and no luck. What do I have to do apart from unistalling 360, saying goodbye to my money and finding another security system such as McAfee?

We will need a bit more information about your network setup:

1. What OS's are running on your machines?

2. How are they connected? Router or direct cable?

3. Do you have file sharing permissions setup on both of the computers? (Did you run the Network wizard on both computers?)

4. Does both N360's give you the same error on both machines when trying a network probe?

Providing at least some answers to these questions will allow us to better help troubleshoot your network issues.
