Issue abstract: Backups keep disappearing each day

Detailed description: Every morning for the last four days i have noticed that my backup are not visible. It seems that i have to correct this by logging out and back in.

Can i still trust Norton to run in the background if I have to keep doing this?

Is there something i can do to stop this happening?

If you have any supporting screenshots, please add them:

consider it done.

It could be that your backups are running in the background, but to view/change the backup set settings you need to log out and back in.

You can check your Norton Security History for your backup status. From the 360 interface click on Security on the left side and then click on Security History. Then click on the drop box that defaults to Recent History, and scroll down to and click on Cloud Backup. That will show whether your backups have been successful while you were not logged into the Backup in the 360 interface.

Hello @MRNIGELGWILLIS
Care to share your progress

I have not received any feedback or advice on this problem.

I dont think there is anything i can do apart from check every morning and run the cloud backup manually.

Are you signed in at Norton 360 client?
What does Cloud Backup → History report?
May be best to document/report your issue via official Norton Support

============================================

~ have you tried calling Norton LiveUpdate + Restart (not Shut down) machine?

~ have you tried Norton 360 → Troubleshooting?

fwiw ~ boiler plate:
If your Norton is not working as expected and you’ve tried Troubleshooting → Reset to Default &or Repair Norton &or clean re-install Norton 360…then…may be best to document via Norton Support.
Note: Reset to Default resets Cloud Backup

I have no problem with doing this thank you.

In brief my history says that last cloud back up ran on 16/04/2026 14:43:34 when it say up to date.

I will follow up on your feedback today and say how things go.

thx

Hello.

I am not sure where you addition advice within the steps for troubleshooting but:

I performed the first, reset to default and that did not have the desired effect. That is i could not see my current backup.

So i moved onto the 2nd, repair Norton. That created a shortcut on my desktop as well. This did not give me access to my current backup so i logged out and in again . This did not give me access to my backup.

What should i do now? re-establish my backup by deleting my old one and see what happens tomorrow?

Advice urgently required since i think i am now at risk!

Note: Reset to Default resets Cloud Backup

============================================

Yes—with Reset to Default…you have to create a new backup set, but:

  • It’s just to unlock the system
  • It doesn’t erase or overwrite old cloud backups

============================================

fwiw ~ ChatGPT (Norton app)

After Reset to Default in Norton 360, the client typically loses the local binding to your cloud backup set. So effectively:

The “handshake” between the client and the cloud backup service needs to be re-established.

What that “handshake” actually includes

It’s not just logging in—it’s a combination of:

  • Your Norton account authentication
  • The device identity (your PC name/ID)
  • The backup set definition (what to back up, schedule, etc.)

The reset wipes the last part (and sometimes the device association), which is why:

  • The UI shows “Create Backup”
  • Existing cloud sets aren’t rendered
  • Backup/restore controls are unavailable

How the handshake gets re-established

The reliable way (what Norton expects)

Create a new backup set:

  1. Click Create Backup
  2. Select folders (can be minimal to start)
  3. Run one backup

This:

  • Recreates a local backup set object
  • Rebinds the client to the cloud service
  • Restores UI functionality (including Restore)

Supporting steps (helpful if things stay broken)

  • Sign out → restart → sign back in
  • Ensure same Norton account
  • Confirm device name (in case old backups are tied to a different one)

Important nuance

Re-establishing the handshake:

  • :white_check_mark: Does not delete old cloud backups
  • :cross_mark: Does not guarantee the old set will reappear in the UI

Norton often treats the new set as a separate entity, even if the old data still exists in the cloud.

Practical takeaway

  • Yes, you must re-establish the client ↔ cloud linkage
  • The simplest trigger is creating a new backup set
  • After that, you regain:
    • Visibility
    • Control
    • Ability to verify backups

Hello @MRNIGELGWILLIS

Have you verified backups online? https://my.norton.com/extspa/backup

After Reset to Default + creating a new backup set, the client should re-enumerate and display prior backup sets alongside the current one.

=============================================

fwiw ~ ChatGPT (Norton app)

In Norton 360 v22, the Norton Backup Drive acted like a mounted volume:

  • You could browse backups directly in File Explorer
  • It felt immediate and transparent
  • Much less dependence on the client “syncing state”

From v24+ onward, Norton shifted to a more service/API-driven UI, which:

  • Pulls backup metadata from the cloud on demand
  • Relies heavily on background sync + indexing
  • Can feel slow or inconsistent, especially after resets or when re-binding is needed

=============================================

If sign out → sign in reliably makes your backup sets reappear, then:

The client isn’t refreshing or persisting its cloud backup index/session, so it only re-syncs when you force authentication.

In other words:

  • Cloud data is fine :check_mark:
  • Your account is fine :check_mark:
  • The client isn’t auto-reconciling state :cross_mark:

Why it feels like a daily requirement

Two common patterns cause exactly what you’re seeing:

1) Token/session expiry without auto-refresh

  • Norton stays “signed in” visually
  • But the backup service token expires (often ~24 hours)
  • Client doesn’t refresh it correctly
  • Backup UI goes blank/stale until re-login

2) Backup service stops polling

  • Background service doesn’t re-query cloud
  • UI freezes on last-known (or empty) state
  • Re-login forces a fresh pull

Quick ways to confirm which one it is

You don’t need tools—just observe timing:

  • After reboot: is it already missing? → likely cache/binding issue
  • Works for hours, breaks next day: → likely token refresh issue
  • Norton still shows you as signed in: → definitely background sync failure, not auth loss

What’s worth trying (in order)

1) Full clean reinstall (not just uninstall)

Use Norton’s Remove & Reinstall (NRnR) tool:

  • Choose Remove Only
  • Reboot
  • Reinstall fresh and sign in once

This clears:

  • Cached backup metadata
  • Stale tokens
  • Broken service bindings

2) Check background services (quick sanity check)

Make sure these are running (Services.msc):

  • Norton Security / related services

If they’re stopping or delayed, that can break sync.

3) Watch one full cycle

After reinstall:

  • Create/run a small backup
  • Next day, check before logging in again

:backhand_index_pointing_right: If it’s broken again, you’ve got a clean repro.

=============================================

How to report it (use this wording)

When you contact Norton Support, describe it like this:

“Cloud backup sets are present (confirmed by storage usage), but the Norton 360 client does not display them unless I sign out and sign back in. This occurs daily, indicating failure to persist or refresh the backup service session/index.”

That clearly identifies it as:

  • A sync/session defect
  • Not configuration or data loss

Bottom line

You’ve already isolated the core issue:

The “handshake” fixes it because it forces a fresh cloud sync—something the client should be doing automatically but isn’t.

You shouldn’t have to touch it daily. If a clean reinstall doesn’t stabilize it, this is squarely on Norton to fix.

Were my machine. I’d clean re-install Norton 360. I’d create new backup set and monitor. If my backup is not visible & requires logging out and back in. I’d document/report “Backups keep disappearing each day” issue via Norton Support.

Last night i managed to complete my cloud backup without issue and this morning i did not need to log in to access my backup. BTW during this affair i made a point of checking that my backup was still available online and it was so. I will check over the coming days.
