I'm trying to include a couple of folders to a backup set. An item that came up at the top of the list from the Help Center, when I typed in the search phrase 'Add folders to backup set'. The item description said 'Add or exclude files and folders in your backup set'. I brought up the page that instructs how to do this. I followed the instructions. After launching Norton 360, my application was arranged differently than in the instructions and the instructions indicated things that were not in my version. For example, the instructions said to locate the window 'My Norton' next to 'Device Security' and click 'Open'. My version has an icon, not a window, for 'My Norton' and it's next to an icon titled 'Performance'. On my version I navigated through an entirely different set of steps than the instructions indicated and eventually got to a screen titled 'Backup Sets'. The instructions referenced a 'Backup Set' drop-down list which was not in my version. There are two places that I can go to 'What' as indicated in the instructions, but none had a means to include files or folders. I can't find any other way to include the folders that I want to add. Sorry for the long-winded explanation. I hope it makes sense and I hope someone knows what I can do.
Hi, BobRenton,
Welcome to our community!
Another one of our knowledgeable posters, RoloX2, has found that Norton isn't doing either a full or a true incremental backup: it's just modifying the master backup with any changes that have been made to it.
Based on this, having your folder simply renamed to its new name is exactly what I'd expect, yes.
Hi, Thank you for your response.
Let me see if I can rephrase the question.
As the backup appears to be smart enough to rename the folder in the master backup, why did it backup all the files within that folder?
Well, most likely what actually happened, at the technical level, was that Norton noticed a "new" folder had been created and filled with stuff (the renamed folder), so it backed it up. Then it noticed that an "old" folder (the original name) was no longer there, so it removed it.
The effect was that the folder had just been renamed in your backup, as it had been on your computer. But it hadn't done anything especially complicated.

I'll go with this.
Renaming a folder also confounds file synch programs and they behave as DistEd explained.
The reason is that these programs have no way of knowing that the folder was renamed. The only way around that would be to have a service always running in the background that monitors all file system I/O to log changes and then incoporate it into the backup; all that wouldn't be worth it.
Yes, I guess that makes sense. Thank you for your explanation.
Thank you so much for your response and detailed instructions. I tried it and it worked perfectly.

From Norton 360 tray icon > Open Norton 360 > Settings > Backup Settings > Configure
Or, Backup (next to Performance) > Backup Sets > What > Add or Exclude files and folders
Note: Create New Set
