Bank of America security screen

Recently, BoA updated its website. Two weeks ago, I signed in to access my account, and a BoA screen popped up over my account information asking me for additional information. I called BoA tech service because the screen was requesting info I don't have (atm check card, security code, pin, etc...) in addition to information I do have like an SSN and DL number. I entered the DL number but could not go any further; message appeared asking for my ATM card info.  BoA advised it was a glitch and that the website had been experiencing problems.

I tried to access the account again today and the same thing happened. This time, tech assistance advised me that the screen is not an official BoA screen. Can you recommend any steps to check my computer to see if it is infected?

Thanks

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

Please try turning off the smart screen and see if that helps.. Can you please tell us what Norton product you have and the version number? Also what o/s and service pack and is it 32 or 64 bit please? Do you have any other real time security programs running now? Thanks.

Hello,

I am running Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, ver. 10/18/2010 rev. 2.

I will also try turning off smart screen as suggested.

Thanks

I'm running Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3. Not sure about 32 or 64-bit.

Hi a12,

Anytime you get a screen like that, that asks for information that the site either already has, or shouldn't need to know (SSN and DL numbers are not necessary to access your online account) you should immediately suspect something criminal is going on.  First, make sure that you are entering the correct URL for Bank of America.  Make sure the SSL cerificate checks out (click the padlock in the address bar or status bar of your browser).

Download, update and run a full scan with the FREE version of Malwarebytes' (Blue Download button) to see if it detects anything on your PC that might be redirecting your visits from legitimate bank sites to fake phishing sites.

Hello a12-

Did you get your issue figured out?

On the Bank of America webpage, if you choose to "enroll" in online banking, then the online enrollment form pages ask questions about ATM card numbers, Social Security Number/Tax ID, etc.

I believe that if you are enrolling and seeing these types of questions from their website, that should be normal.

If you are not enrolling and just trying to login to your regular online banking service, I would not expect these questions to be normal - they should be asking for your user identification and password.

One way to help confirm you are working with the legitimate Bank of America website is to check if your browser location bar is displaying a green background.  Bank of America uses extended validation certificates on their website that helps your browser confirm the identity of the web server.  Bank of America has some information about this here: http://www.bankofamerica.com/onlinebanking/index.cfm?template=faq_security#extendedssl

In general I would not recommend disabling the Internet Explorer Smart Screen filter, since it helps alert you to fake websites (Norton Antiphishing is a good feature for this protection too, available with Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 products).

Hope this information helps!

Since you are not using a consumer version I think you should follow this link:

For corporate edition products please visit the STN forums at their new location:

FWIW I'm a BoA on line banking user and I've not has any problems of the kind you describe -- although their whole system was down recently for a day for FL users -- but I remember early on that automatic log ons had problems with their additional security screen.

But asking fo information like that sounds more like a hacked scam to me ....

I hope you sort it out and if it is via the Corporate site, please come back and let us know the outcome.

Good point and also the reason why I didn't put in my SSN. Thanks for the reference on the scan.

I have not as of yet. Will be running a phising detect program to see if it picks anything up. I wasn't enrolling, just signing in. The weird thing was that because I didn't enter the information they were looking for - i.e. checking account/atm info - the overlay screen blocked me from getting into my account.

Thank you.

It's all squared away. I downloaded the Norton Power Eraser for free, ran it and eliminated 4 suspicious files that I had never seen before on my system. After re-boot, I accessed my BoA from the previously infected machine without any problem.

Glad to hear it -- that's going to help others to know what you did ....

You knowwhere to find us if you need anything ....

Hi a12-
