Hi
I've been using NAV for years on my laptop which has XP Home SP3 now. I've also been using Mcafee Personal Firewall Plus alongside it with no problems. When my renewal came up last week I decided to upgrade to NIS 2009 downloading it from the Symantec Store. The installation seemed to go fine - it detected Mcafee and uninstalled it, installed NIS, I clicked on Live Update and it downloaded and installed 53 days of updates.
Next day I noticed it hadn't updated the Virus Defs for over 24 hours. Clicked on Live Update and it said couldn't initialize Live Update. Went to Support, by remote he uninstalled, reinstalled. Took ages as I got a couple of Blue Screen errors where Windows wouldn't boot up properly and had to reconnect in Safe Mode ! So same again seemed fine, connected thru LU,updated, did Quick and Full scan. Next morning same problem - plus Scans wouldn't work, and I got Blue Screen errors citing SYMFW.SYS (Norton Firewall Filter). Had to go into safe mode and do system restore to previous week !
As far as I was concerned Support made things worse ! Emailed them - no technical help in reply. Got refund.
So downloaded NRT - ran it a few times - uninstalled NIS / NAV and LU.
Still have folders in Program Files for Norton Installer and Norton Support.
Still have some Symantec folders under Documents and Settings\(Users),
Symantec Shared under Program Files\Common Files, and
Symantec under Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\application data.
Should NRT have deleted these ?
I've now got a (cheaper) NIS 2009 CD-Rom and I want to install again. Will these folders interfere with things ? Can I delete them manually ? I will uninstall Mcafee myself before I install NIS I think.
Any thoughts much appreciated.
