Hi all,

Hmmm ... zero replies from anyone about what product is the best backup tool to use.

Sadly, this helps answer my qeustion very well.

Not bitter and twisted ... the truth is that Symantec are geared towards this area and while the company appears to earn some money from this niche area, it is not of sufficient interest to justify any support effor or product support.

Based upon my own research I have found a pretty good solution - not Symantec.

Pity ...

I apologize for the delay in response. For your particular “advanced user” needs, a Symantec consumer product might not be the best solution for you. Have you considered any of the Symantec enterprise products, like Ghost Solution Suite? From the looks of your backup requirements, this would be a much better solution for you.

Hi Tony,

No biggie ... my last post contained mis-types.  It should have read: "Symantec are not geared to this area (backup)".  Not a criticism - observation which I relate too.  Companies need to make profit to remain in business.  In my humble opinion most users ignore backups entirely or do it poorly.  Symantec still has products like WINFAX on their books (and it is sold here and there) but you need to know of it before you can look on the site ... partition magic seems to have drifted down the core product line too.

It happens for commercial reasons that I accept.  (Pity about Talkworks Pro ... a really fantastic niche product worth its weight in gold.)

Thanks for the heads-up on Ghost.  It seems to do one thing and one thing only - backup.  It's difficult to tell if it supports a wide range of DVD drives or not ... helpful / not a deal killer though.  The larger the drive the more likely I'd back up to eSata ... drives are dirt cheap.

We don't appear to have a Ghost centric forum here - leading me to wonder if there is a critical mass of users to (a) justify product development / support  (b) help each other with issues on the forum.

The VISTA solution (microsoft) seems ... interesting in a not so nice way :)

Any tips / tricks I should know about to give it a fair trial?

Thanks ...

You may wish to check out the Enterprise product forum http://forums.symantec.com for more information on advanced Backup Solutions.

With your dual-boot system, Norton Ghost 14 is not the solution for you. This setup is not supported (though some customers may be able to give you their workarounds for this issue). Your best bet is an Enterprise product, like Ghost Solution Suite. They do more than just backup - they can convert disk images into VMWare images, which many people are finding to be a good alternative to a backup. There is also system recovery functionality, when you're not able to boot to the system for some reason and want to diagnose the issue. They Recovery Disk may be able to help in that situation. I'd recommend checking out the product to see the many features. Thanks!
