Black arrow in the title of YouTube when they are playing

I noticed that when YouTube is playing, I see a black arrow ">" in front of it.  IE10.

Hi,
Operating system? Does it happen when you change browsers?

Thanks

I experienced this with two computers. Both Windows 7 and both IE10. To test this, load YouTube video and play it. A black arrow appears in the front of title. So if the title is “Test” during playback it becomes “> Test.” New feature that shows which tab has video play back?

Can you test it out?

Hi Dave,

I just tried it here with IE10 and don't see the black arrow you mentioned.  Do you have Compatibility Mode enabled for youtube?  If yes, try disabling it, it no, try enabling it.

Are you logged into youtube when this happens?

Cheers,

Dave.

Screenshot when video is playing? And nope no compatibility mode. Signed out and on. Same difference.

I think this is what Dave20 is referring to:

No idea what it means ...

Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit with IE 10 -- Compatibility Mode OFF

Oh Ok, I see it now...

I have no idea about that either.

I see the same thing in the address bar of Chrome, but only when playing a video.  I think it just means a video is playing.  It's the same symbol for play on audio devices and it doesn't appear if I just browse youtube.

I'd say nothing to be concerned about.

Cheers.

Yup that's the black arrow I'm refering to.  I think it's quite nifty to see what tab have a video playing (just in case you have multiple YouTube tabs).

Good point! My wife watches a lot of streaming video from eg explore.org and tht indicator does not show up so sometimes she has several running and wonders why things get slow or jerky .....

Though it does not seem to work on all videos.  BBC website videos do not work and neither does CNN.

Krusty is correct; notice how if you hit pause on your video (or it buffers) the “play” symbol disappears.  Oddly enough, I noticed this as well during YouTube’s Nerd Week, lol.  Really, it’s probably a one pixel gif tracking every video you watch.  What is also interesting is that if I find videos on YouTube that I already had in my Favourites List - - now with the advent of this symbol (out of curiosity) I clicked “Add to Favourites” and, instead of telling me that the item in question is already in my Favourites List, it adds it again, with two exceptions that I can see thusfar.  If you scroll through your Favourites List, your item will not be where it was AND you will see the addition of that ugly “play” symbol.  Videos from YouTube in my Favourites List that I have not relooked up in the abovementioned manner, do not have that ugly symbol.  Although I cracked a joke about YouTube tracking earlier, now, with them RE-RECORDING your Favourites (with the ugly “play” symbol) who is to say the extent of what is really occurring?  Hmph.  The intellectuals (and I use that descriptor as loosely as possible) at YouTube thought they would sneak this through without much commotion - - they were wrong!  It didn’t get past my hammers and I see that others noticed it as well.

Have a good day,

H.B.
