Boot from NIS system disk -- what drives are seen?

I have Norton GoBack and NIS, probably 2007. Run Windows XP SP3.

Computer crashed w/ "windows cannot run, file is damaged or missing, \windows\system32\config\system"

Asked GoBack to restore, but its only restore points were after the crash! (Every time I turn it on, the BIOS loads then I get the GoBack splash screen, then after that exits normally I get the windows error message).

I've been doing a lot of investigating!

  • I've booted w/ the XP cd and run a chkdsk; all good.
  • I ran Dell diagnostics on the hard drive; all good.
  • I followed MS instructions for the error, didn't work.
  • I cannot boot into safe mode.

I have lots of data on that drive and need to find a way to back it up before repairing XP, but can't make a (bootable) cd from any other computers in this house and the restore console won't let me use wild cards or copy directories or ...

Finally I tried to use the NIS system CD to boot. That worked. (The most recent CD I have is 2006).

But the oddest thing.

The NIS CD is drive A:

It shows a drive C:

Drive C is *not* the partition / drive I boot to from the XP CD (or could see from XP, when XP was working).

And although I can access files at the top of the directory listing, attempting to dir subdirectories beyond the first few gives me an error reading drive (abort, retry...)

The version of DOS used doesn't support CHKDSK. (And it doesn't see my USB drive).

What am I seeing?

Can GoBack help me recover my data?

Help and suggestions warmly received!!
