Boot Magic Question in Partition Magic 8

Good Morning All

I am new here and have a question regarding the setup of Boot Magic in Partition Magic 8.

My older Laptop is running Windows 98SE and I wanted to install Windows XP as a second OS, then be able to boot to either OS using Boot Magic.

I went through the instructions on doing this and installed Windows XP.  However, after I finished, when I startup, Boot Magic starts OK, but when I select either Windows 98SE or Windows XP, it just takes me to the Windows Dual Boot (boot.ini) screen where I then have to select which OS to start.  In other words, Boot Magic is not really doing anything and my choice of which OS to start is really selected in the Microsoft Boot.ini startup as if Boot Magic were not even installed.

How do I stop the boot.ini screen from appearing and have Boot Magic select my startup OS choice?  From what I can tell, there is a single boot.ini file being used for both WIndows98SE and Windows XP because if I edit it, the edit shows up whether I look at the boot.ini file from Windows98SE or from Windows XP.

Note:  Partition Magic and Boot Magic were both installed in Windows98SE and the FAT32 partition.  Windows XP was installed in a new NTFS partition after the FAT32 one.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Hi jrhafer,

Welcome to Norton Community!!!

You have Windows XP installed on NTFS partition. To make it work, please check if the option "Override Default Selections"is selected in BootMagic settings.

Also make sure the settings are as provided under "Configuring BootMagic to Work on an NTFS System" in the User Guide on page number 95.

Thank you pore_vinod for your reply.  I was able to solve my issue by doing three things, which included your answer.  First, I had to reinstall Windows XP into a new FAT32 partition.  I then used Windows XP and converted the Windows XP partition to a NTFS partition.  Finally, I then set up Boot Magic as per your message.  After doing that, everthing worked perfect.  I can now boot to either Windows 98SE or Windows XP using Boot Magic.

Thank you again for your reply.
