Just to clarify:
Have you checked Computer Settings / configure / Scroll down within that section and find Real Time Protection / Early Load.
Is Early Load OFF (default?) or ON ?
In this, he would want it on, I would think – until he’s certain there isn’t any active malware at boot up.
Early Load is ON. I turned it on right after installation.
Killyourtv (what a great sn!),
What you describe does sound like malware; and I understand your caution in rebooting.
Have you tried using the Norton Recovery Tool CD. It scans at power on. If you bought NIS or NAV 2009 retail, the CD should have been included in the box. If you bought in online, you should have been given a link to the image (which you have to burn to CD) following their instructions. Norton Recovery Tool and Instructions.
You also might consider one of the other free viral scanners mentioned hereabouts, such as Malwarebytes (Malwarebytes via CNET); boot up in safe mode and run that program.
Good luck
Thanks for the replies people.
I downloaded the Recovery Tool a few days ago, but haven't yet burned it to disc so that I can run it. Guess I'll get on that ASAP. Of course, it'll take me offline for a while and necessitate a couple of reboots. Bummer.
I'll continue to monitor this thread for any further assistance or thoughts that anyone may have.
Well, this is interesting. I ran the Norton Recovery Tool, which found absolutely nothing amiss with my system. Removed the disc, and the system restarted completely normally. Boot screen for 8 - 10 seconds as is normal.
As I said before, the boot time has been increasing with every restart for several days, and suddenly it seems to be OK again. I'm pretty baffled by this.
If the issue returns I'll try the other tool mentioned above and repost to this thread. I really hope I don't have to.
Again, thanks for the fast replies, and sorry about the formatting of the original post, which has kindly been corrected.

I appreciate your point but mine was OFF by default.
If he were infected then it would be a matter of removing the infection; if not then it would be a matter of identifying the cause of delay and the Early Load could have been a cause to eliminate.
At least that was the thought behind my question -- it was not an instruction but a query.
Anyway I'm glad a solution was found .... for now? <g>
Your Symantec Network Driver Filter could be corrupted. What it does is act like filter, between you and the World Wide Web. I would suggest contacting chat support, and they can assist you in running the Norton Removal Tool and deleting all Norton related directories.
