Bootable recovery tool - can't install to USB

My father has a CIDOX infection that NIS can detect but can't remove.  I've tried Power Eraser... no difference.  So I downloaded Norton Bootable Recovery Tool to install on a new USB key.

When I run NBRT Wizard and select USB key, it says please insert a key, when one is already installed and accessible via WIndows Explorer.

Any ideas?  I'm trying to help remotely over TeamViewer, and can't get to his house for a few days.

Thanx!

Hi jprdanfp,

I believe it is asking for the product key for your father's NIS.  Go to www.nortonaccount.com and log in using your fathers email address and password for his Norton Account.  The product key will be displayed there and you can copy it in.  I am not sure if once your father is logged into his Norton Acount it will require the product key or not.

No dice... not asking for a product key.  NBRT starts up, and gives me a choice of 4 icons of where to create the tool.  I click on USB key, and a new window pops up saying " INFO - please insert USB key".

The key is already inserted.  I test it by copying a random file to it which worked ok.

Any other ideas?

OK - so you are just now creating the NBRT on a USB drive - not attempting to use it.

I found the following - perhaps the info may help.

Only thing I can think of, is to leave the USB Drive disconnected until it tells you to insert it???  :smileyembarrassed:

I have mine created on a CD, so I have never attempte the USB version.

Didn't work, same response.  I was able to install the NBRT onto a USB attached to my computer.  When I see him next week, I'll bring it and hope it will work on his machine.  Wish me luck.

Thanks for your suggestions.  I'll let you know how it turns out.

Sorry I wasn't more help - one more thing - you may have to setup your father's system in the BIOS to be able to boot from a USB drive, or it will not boot from the USB,m but boot ia the normal windows route.

Just one question jordanfp,
Did you try the same procedures on another USB stick or port? Perhaps NRBT just couldn’t access the USB Stick currently inserted due to may be some untold reasons…

Also have you done system restart after installing NRBT and USB stick?

May be it will be working…

Happy Easter and Good Luck!

I can't reccomend any because I don't need them but there are lots of free tools to make bootable flash drives from ISO's.

I had similar problems with the tool not being able to burn a CD but I never had trouble with it making an ISO.

Dave

I was able to create and ISO and burn it to a DVD.  When I booted from this new DVD, the recovery tool ran and WORKED. It removed the issue, and now the PC is operating fine.

Thanks for everyone's input!

Jordan,

I'd be interested to know what version(s) of Windows were involved?

You were trying to create the bootable USB "key" remotely?

Initially I tried to do it remotely by accessing his computer via TeamViewer.  I tried to do again locally when I got to his house with a USB key I knew was OK, and it still didn't work.  But I came equipped with blank DVDs, and created an ISO to the DVD.  I then modified the boot order, and NBRT ran right away from the DVD.  It detected and resolved the CIDOX issue.  I then rebooted from the HDD and presto... all fixed.

Both his computer and my remote computer are running Win7, fully updated.

Thanks for the details. Glad it worked not only to make a bootable disk but to fix the problem!

Sounds like a defect in the NBRT.

I had one occasion early on making a bootable thumbdrive from WIndows 7 Enterprise. It transferred the files onto the thumbdrive but it was not bootable.

In this case I used EasyBCD, which I have installed since I multiboot my desktop, and used a module in it to make it bootable.

Since then Microsoft fixed their "Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool" (which works find in Windows 8 BTW) so that it makes USB thumbdrives that work!

But in your case the problem was getting the files onto the thumbdrive if I understand correctly.

Here might be a workaround from the link in the NBRT  instructions at:

https://security.symantec.com/nbrt/nbrt.aspx?lcid=1033  which has a link to"

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v72380755_EndUserProfile_en_us  which includes near the end:

ISO file support to run the tool from a Virtual Machine:

You can create an ISO file as your customized Norton Bootable Recovery Tool. This ISO file can be copied to a DVD and used as a recovery DVD on any computer.

Use that procedure to make the ISO file and then use the "Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool" to copy the ISO to the key as a bootable tool ......

Instructions on using it and downloading it are at:

Note:

<< NOTE: You need to be an administrator on the computer you are installing the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool on. The tool requires the Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 or higher.  >>
