Camera not recognized

I was upgraded to NIS 18.1.0.37 (2010/2011?) from 2007 following a program crash. All of my settings have disappeared.

Windows Explorer does not recognize that my camera has been plugged in. What settings must be changed to recognize USB devices?

Hi JoeBrown157,

Which settings disappeared? Norton Settings, or all your Windows settings?

What kind of crash did you have? Could you provide us with more background on what happened? Thanks! :smileyhappy:

Hi joebrown157:

When you upgraded to 2011, did you install it over top of the older version, or did you remove it completely first?  Was the older prgram also NIS or was it NAV or Systemworks?

What operating system, service pack level, and version of Internet Explorer are you running?

Windows Vista SP2

Internet Explorer 8.0.6001

Used to have NIS 2007. It crashed. On-line articles suggested that I uninstall and re-install. I uninstalled it and cleaned the registry. Norton support installed the latest version.

All of my firewall settings are gone.

Windows Explorer did not recognize my daughter's camera as an external drive. She does not know what program transfers her files to the PC so I cannot set the firewall to pass it.

Are there settings to accept/reject devices?

HI joebrown157,

Was the crash you experienced while still on NIS 2007? Did you just uninstall it through Control panel > uninstall a program? How did you "clean the registry"? If you cleaned it manually all it takes is one minor mistake to really mess your computer up.

Given that your old version of NIS was so old we always recommend to uninstall it through control panel first, and then use the Norton removal tool to completely clean it off your system. BTW, it is normal for firewall settings not to transfer over. Any custom firewall rules must be added back by hand.

The camera not being "recognized" as you put it does not sound like a firewall issue but rather like the device driver is messed up. Can you bring up WIndows device manager and see if it shows an error for the camera?

Since you have come from such an old version of NIS I am going to make the following recommendations.

If you use Identity Safe you should back up this data first. Please see this link for details on how to do this.

Before you use the removal tool, please download the full version of NIS 2011 from here. Please note that this is the English version so please let me know if you need a different language and I will provide the appropriate link.

Once you have downloaded NIS, you can proceed with use of the removal tool as indicated below.

Please NOTE that this removes ALL Symantec products so be sure to have your license keys ready as you will need to reinstall all your Symantec software products. You can get your Norton product key from your Norton Account.

Once done please download the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec from this link.

For your protection, disconnect from the Internet before continuing.

Do a conventional uninstall of NIS via the Control Panel and then restart your computer.

Run the Norton Removal Tool and once it is completed, please reboot your computer. Once up please run the Removal Tool one more time and once again reboot.

After this if the camera is still not functional I would recommend reinstalling the drivers for it and see if this corrects the issue. Please do not reconnect back to the Internet until after NIS 2011 is installed.

Then please install NIS 2011 from the full version downloaded earlier. Once installed please reconnect back to the Internet and run Live Update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it reports there are no more updates.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

As AllenM said, it seems like a device driver problem rather than a firewall issue. To check this, you can disable Smart Firewall for a few minutes. If it still does not work, then:

1. Uninstall the USB portable device from Device Manager.
2. Scan for Hardware changes. This will reinstall the USB driver.

I used the Control Panel to uninstall NIS 2007. My internet connection was disconnected for most of this time.

Then I used the Norton Removal Tool.

Then I used the Uniblue RegistryBooster to clean the registry.

NIS 2011 was installed remotely by Norton technical support.

I thought that all of my firewall settings would be removed but they are still there.

After replacing NIS 2007 with NIS 2001, I logged in as supervisor, uninstalled the camera from the Portable Device folder under the Device Manager.

When plugged in the camera was recognized.
