Can Backup Sets Reset?

I've been using Norton 360 for over two years, and have been backing up my data online since. Recently though, the backup feature indicated that ALL my files need to be backed up again; including the ones that I know have already been backed up. The green check mark icon on all my pictures, for e.g. are gone but neither am I seeing the blue icon. When I click preview for the files waiting to be backed up, ALL the files of that type are coming up (and I know its going to take forever to back up again). I didn't change any settings or anything, the only thing I did was update to the latest version of Norton.

Hello anda3219,

In this case because the software was in essence reinstalled it lost all of its local background marks showing that the files were previously backed up.  So, yes the software does need to perform a fresh one time backup and then will be back up to speed going forward.

Thanks for this information Nicole.

Which updates can we expect this to happen on?  It would be nice to be able to predict it as I have found this happen on a number of occasions when I have not been aware of any update (though I know that N360 is updating itself all the time).

I would also be interested to know the size of anda3219's backup file on disk after the new backup has been run.  I have found that when the "reset" happens the size of the file grows as if the new backup data is being added on top of (the unrecoverable) old data.

It might also be interesting to know if anda3219 is able to recover the old backed up files before doing the new backup as it would be rather sad if a backup were lost to a Norton update...

I was able to restore my data from another computer, but when searching for the restore files from my laptop I could only find the files that were backed up on my local disk, not online.

I am puzzled anda3219, you said you only had one backup set but now you refer to having files backed up on the local disk and online.  When you look at Manage Backup sets where does it say your backup was supposed to go?

They were supposed to go to online storage. I did have more than one backup set but when I tried to restore my files I was only seeing one from my laptop. When I accesed online backup from another computer I was able to restore my files from all my backup sets.

Thanks for that explanation anda3219.

I must admit it leaves me puzzled so I will leave others to comment.

As to working from here, may I suggest that you set up a new backup set, run it, check that it works and you can retrieve from it and then keep an eye on it.  Personally I now keep two backup sets running in parallel so that if any problems occur with one then the other is ready to take over.  That however may not be a very practical solution if you want to have an online backup.

Good luck for the future.

Thanks, thats what I did. Just hope it doesn't happen again.
