Hi
Going on from my previous post, which was "resolved" with grateful thanks to PapauZ & Turbo.
Am I able to renew my NIS licence early and, if so, will a new year start right away or will it start when my current licence expires?
Thank you.

Hi Myrm,
If you activate your product earlier as I know it will overwrite the remaining days, and start the 365 days from the activation day, not 365+x days.
So I suggest you to wait until your current subscription is expired. Then in your case there's two "methods".
1. If the 2010 version is not ready, just activate it with the new key you bought, and after 2010 is ready to download, get it and install it with your key.
2. If the 2010 version is available, uninstall 2009, and install 2010 as a trial. And don't activate it with your new subscription key. If you use the trial period too, it will give you additional 14 days. So 365+14 days. ;) After the trial period is over, activate it with your key.
I think you will find that if she renews early it will, in fact, add her remaining days to the 365.
mdturner are you sure??
Last time I did the renew, it cleared my last days (5-6 day)…
Yes. He/She can check with customer support to confirm if he/she has any doubts.
When I renewed my subscription in July, it added the remaining days of my old subscription to the new one. To contact customer support, you can go over here:

I can not remember from when I activated it again as I leave it to the last day,but ever since I have been reading these forums this has been the advice that you will lose the remaining days of your previous subscription.
I believe that mdturner and Yaso are correct, and no days will be lost with early renewal. As mdturner suggested if there are doubts verify with customer service. Yaso has provided a link to customer service in his post.
Hi everybody, and very many thanks for all your help.
I think I will just play it safe and wait until the day my subscription is due to expire before renewing.
PS> It's "he" ;-P

That has happened to me twice so far ;-))) I think we're going to have to do some DNA testing here...;-)) Good luck with your subscription renewal :-D
Hi,
I would like to clarify this a little. There are two ways in which you get new days on your product.
1. You renew your current subscription, either automatically or by using a bought renewal key. In this case any remaining days will be added to your subscription. Having 20 days upon renewal with 365 would end up on a total of 385.
2. You buy a new product key. In this case you will activate a new subscription with the new key and any remaining days on the old subscription will be lost.
It all comes down to if you use the same productkey or not. Do not confuse product key with renewal key, those are two different keys.
As said before, if uncertain about how to go about it, contact customer service.
Regards
jAW
Hi ALL,
As Jaw said, renewal always adds up to the existing subscription. The no of days tied to the product key gets added up during renewal. But during reactivation (activating with a different key), the no of days tied to that particular key would be taken. Subscription between two keys cannot be added. If you plan to activate with a new key, wait till the current subscription expires. If you plan to renew, then you can do it right way from the product main UI by clicking 'Subscribe now'.

Hi Gayathri.
Very many thanks for taking the time to reply and confirm the status when renewing a subscription. I shall renew shortly.
Kind regards.
Let me just stress one thing as I understand it:
-- to the best of my knowledge "renew" means buying a renewal from Symantec itself and so it would be on line. You can't go into a store or to a mailorder house and say "I want to renew my subscription to NIS" -- well you probably can but you will then end up at "On the other hand .... below!
Oh yes and as an existing customer you get a discount if you want to buy another Symanec product, even if totally different. Like if you have NIS2009 and want a copy of GHOST then you are entiled to the upgrade price, I think it is called, with about 25% discount.
On the other hand sometimes if what you want to do is add time to an existing product, as in your case, you may find that you can buy a new copy of the product for much less with store discounts either instant or mail-in (or sometimes both!), especially if there is an upgraders' discount coupon with it apart from any discounts from the stores.
In that case you are in effect buying a new KEY -- if you use it immediately it will lose any unexpired time and give you the normal 365/366 days if it is a 1 year licence. But if you keep it unused until the existing licence is about to expire then you can use the new, unused KEY and get a full year from that date in the future.
It's more complex but sometimes it is a very, very substantial saving but you have to check dates very carefully and get your rebate coupons in within the time slice for the specific "bargain" you are getting and all sorts of dates are involved -- bought within a certain period; mail in the rebate coupon within a certain time slot -- sometimes 21 days from purchase sometimes 30 days from purchase ..... and provide the correct evidence of the valid purchase and the basis for the upgraders' rebate.
Good luck and just make sure you play it the safe way -- it's dangerous out there .....
Hi Everybody
I thought I would comne on here and just clear up any confusion people had over what would happen if you renewed your subscription before it expired. Some seemed to say that you would lose outstanding days and have 1 year, others said that your outstanding days would be added on to a new year.
I had 22 days of subscription outstanding on my Norton Internet Security 2009 product today. Those 22 days WERE ADDED onto my renewal, so I have 391 days of subscription remaining.
Great news Myrm, and dont’t forget your free upgrade to NIS 2010 when it comes out.
Hi Turbo.
Yes I certainly shall be watching for the free upgrade. I have used the beta version of NIS 2010 and it looks great.
Thanks for the feedback.
I take it then that you went on line to Norton and used the renewal there?
I was trying to stress the difference between the two basic ways of adding a year onto an existing subscription -- renewal does add the time onto any unexpired time; new key does not.
But we have had plenty of people who did not appreciate the difference and were upsert when they bought the new copy of Norton and found that it replaced the unexpired time and did not add to it.
So thanks again for the confirmation.
