Hi, im using the latest version of Norton AntiVirus and i can’t find an option to turn it off. I know i can disable it’s protection, but i want to completely turn off norton’s process(es) in order to free maximum amount of memory consumed when i run games and applications that require much system resources. Is that possible? Thank you.
Well i think the only process to ‘kill’ is ccsvhost.exe which can’t be disabled (Access Denied), AFAIK in previous versions of Norton there was a possibility to turn off the “program protection” or something like that and the process could have been killed. And as far as the memory, well i have sufficient memory right now but i noticed that it improves the framerate in games and overall performance of the system when there’s less memory used even if theoritically there is still left. And why do you think that might be risky?
Here are some suggestions:
1. Use silent mode - When Silent Mode is enabled, Norton Internet Security suppresses all alerts and suspends the background activities for the duration that you specify. (NIS help). To turn on silent mode, right click on NIS system tray icon and click "Turn on Silent Mode". Silent mode should be automatically turned on if you run a full screen application like a game, but you can manuallu turn it on just to be sure.
2. Disable AntiVirus Auto Protect - This is what I do when I wan't to play a game that requires more resources. Turning off Auto Protect may increase performance, but will put your computer at risk.
There is still a way to turn off Norton Protection - click "Settings - go to miscellaneous settings - find and disable Norton product tamper protection. Now you should be able to disable all ccHstSvc processes (they are two actually). However, you will notice that shortly the process will reappear again. At least this happens on my PC.

The reason you cannot "kill" processes is because NAV has them protected to prevent malware from doing exactly that and disabling your protection.
The reason I think it is risky is rather obvious - any time you are running a PC without some form of protection you leave yourself more exposed to some form of malware infection. However, it is your PC and your choice.
Hm yea the 3rd option you mentioned is what i was looking for, but as you said the process reappears after a while. I guess i just have to accept it. Btw, if at the moment im not browsing the web it’s unlikely that a virus enters my pc… hehe dont be paranoid Thanks for your help!
Hello Juraviel
NAV itself uses very little memory. When you play an online game, it goes into silent mode automatically when you start the game and it shuts off the silent mode when you finish playing. It's also important to keep your antivirus protection on when you are playing online because you can still get attacked while you are playing. You are online when you are playing. Minimum resources are used also especially if you have the new version of NAV. I'm an online player and don't find any problems with having NAV on as it should be on. People can still try and hack you also while you are playing, but that depends on the type of online game also. You never know who you are playing with.
