Can Norton Internet Security reliably backup Outlook.PST when it's open?

Backup apparently backs up Outlook.pst even though Outlook is open and potentially updating the PST file with new emails.  My .PST fie is 500Mb and takes a few minutes to backup.  How is a reliable backup possible in this case?

Thanks for the quick response.  As a retired software engineer I'm interested in how a snapshot can be taken.  Does Norton make a quick copy of the file?  In a quick test, I've just found out that a disk to disk copy of a 500Mb file takes ~30 seconds.

Thanks again

Hi,
I'm not an employee and I doubt that any of them can/will descuss the technical details of what is done and how they do it :smileywink:

I just go with 'they get it done and I'm happy'

Stay well and surf safe

You can create incremental or differential backup with the help of a seperate commercial outlook backup utility which is mentioned here http://www.stellaroutlooktools.com/backup/outlook-mail.php

This will allow to create backup of Outlook mails quickly and the good thing is that you can create backup in a customized manner.

Sarah

Sorry but Norton Internet Security does not contain a backup program.

Are you sure your not asking about Norton 360?

Sorry, I'm actually using Norton Security Suite (provided by Comcast).

Hmmm, Sterral Outlook Tools doesn't appear to add much value.  You can backup all the mail info it mentions simply by copying the PST file somewhere, and it doesn't appear to address the issue I'm interested in - backing up while the file is potentially being updated.

I'm still interested in how reliable Norton's backup while the PST file is being updated.

Dave mentions Snapshots, which sounds promising, but I'd like to know how that's possible on a large .PST file.  Anyone?

Thanks
