Please help this is my fist post. I cannot boot to Windows XP Pro. Norton GoBack has internal damage. I cannot get past the GoBack splash screen. I get failure Code gb_genLog(175). I was able to boot to Cd with gb_prog.exe. Selected option 1 to unhook GoBack and after 4min failure code gb_genlog(181) appeared. I ran this Norton fix several times and GoBack was not unhooked. I am afraid to run Fdisk/MBR or repair Windows XP from installation disk without knowing outcome. I need to save the files on this drive but GoBack will not let me in. Any suggestions?
I’ll respond since no one else has. The GoBack boot CD provides two options. One is unhook and the other is repair. Have you tried repair? If that fails, you’ll probably have to fall back to fdisk /mbr.
Thanks for response. I have not been available for personal reasons. I have not tried to repair or run fdisk/mbr. I was afraid if something went wrong I would never be able to access my C drive. Please comment on possible results from using repair and fdisk/mbr. Norton GoBack crashed when it was trying to rewrite time stamps caused by a bad 3 volt on board battery. I made the mistake of clicking yes for this action without knowing the battery was bad..
It is possible. If you are able to, you might take your HDD and put it in another computer as a slave drive to see if you can copy off data. Choosing repair should be lower risk (though it may take a long time), but there is the possibility that fdisk /mbr could make a change to the parititon map. It shouldn't, but it is a possibility.
I will install the HDD as a slave in another computer and copy data. I will reinstall the HDD into the original computer and try to repair the MBR. I will leave the post open until I can source a test computer to swap the HDD.
I removed the master and installed it into another computer and it could not read the dive. I tried changing jumpers to slave setting and then both master and slave to cable select, still not working. Reinstalled master into computer with crashed Goback. I tried installing Windows 7 and it could not read the C partition. I ran unhook Goback, repair MBR, and FIX/MBR. Indication said MBR was fixed. I tried to unhook Goback again and restarted the computer. I was asked if I wanted Goback to scan for a missing file and I said yes to see if Goback would fix the program. Restarted the computer and it went back to original problem. I ran FIX/MBR again. I restarted the computer and said no for Goback to scan for missing file. I said no for Goback to correct time stamps. The computer booted to XP and I removed Goback using control panel. Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!
My hard drives are PATA connected and I think I wrote a MBR to my slave inadvertently. XP cannot see my D drive. How can I change my D drive from MBR to slave? I checked the drive properties and the D drive is listed as a MBR and the only options available are format. I only see the C drive and other hardware when I click on computer, no D drive. Help
Try removing the C: drive and then fdisk /mbr. The other possibility is that there's a problem with the partition map. Try the fdisk /mbr option first. If that fails I'll post some information that's a little more involved.
