I am unable to uninstall Norton GoBack 4. Attempts to uninstall from Add/Remove Programs gives the message: Error 25040 Unable to shutdown Norton Goback. I have disabled GoBack. I do not have AutoBack enabled. I have tried using gb_prog.exe from a boot disk as mentioned elsewhere. Nothing seems to work. I get the same error message.
In task manager, GBTray.exe and GBPoll.exe are running. On startup, the GoBack splash screen does not display. When Windows (XP Pro, SP2) starts, I get a message asking if I want to re-enable GoBack (I choose no). The GoBack tray icon has an "x", presumably meaning that GoBack is disabled.
I could not end either process, both producing an error message "The operation could not be completed. Access is denied". I tried closing the tray icon, and then ending the processes, with the same result.
Which of the Norton Removal Tools should I choose? I am running NIS 2009, too. The version of GoBack I have (4.02) was a stand-alone product, and not part of any suite. It is not listed in the options on the link to the removal tool. If NIS 2009 has to be uninstalled, that is fine, so long as I can reinstall and reactivate it.
That's probably due to our process protection. If you open NIS and click on Settings. Under "Miscellaneous Settings" turn Norton Product Tamper Protection" to Off. Then try add/remove for GoBack. If that doesn't work now, try task manager again. If it fails use the Norton Removal Tool (there's only one). It will remove 09 as well so you will have to reinstall NIS.
Erik, I have a different but similar problem with GoBack 4.0.0.290, which has been installed on my XP Pro for at least a couple of years with only a few problems such as GoBack refusing to 'go back'. It is a stand alone boxed version.
Problem: Something (don't know what) messed up my file allocation table - Go Back would offer me NO restore options. And so we took out the old drive, and inserted and hooked up a clone of my entire hard drive, to replace the glitched hard drive. NOTE: The clone was made by True Image. We have needed to insert the same type of clone at least 3 or 4 times in the past - e.g., like when setting up a new computer, or when I had a virus a few years back, etc. - with no resulting problems with Norton GoBack. Well, this time was different.
When I booted up my computer after inserting the clone drive, I noticed that the GoBack "splash line" did not appear - i.e., GoBack did not activate. So I pulled up the main GoBack File Recovery 'thing' and clicked on OPTIONS. The message said "GoBack has been deactivated. Do you want to re-activate GoBack?". Well, yes, definitely (GoBack has saved me more times than I can count - I rely on it). So I clicked YES. So the re-activation starts, and it gets just so far (about 45 seconds into the action) and then I get an error message telling me that the feature I need is not available on C:/program files/Norton SystemWorks/Norton GoBack, with an offer to browse for an .msi file (I think it is NortonGoBack.msi - can't find my scratch pad where I had it written, and don't want to try clicking yes again so that I can see the file name again). I have done a search of the entire hard drive and there is no .msi file associated with GoBack.
So I am thinking that it resides on the original 4.0.0.290 disk. So why am I not just sticking it in to find it? Because I am in Dallas awaiting major spinal surgery in the next couple days, and the disk is at home in Arkansas where all of my software is. I can't return to Arkansas to retrieve it for at least 3 months, while I undergo this and one additional surgery and then go through rehab. BUT .... shouldn't this file be somewhere on my computer?
SO .... last night I purchased a new 2008 Norton SystemWorks Standard Edition (2008) which includes GoBack for XP Pro, with the intent to just UNinstall the current GoBack 4.0 and INSTALL the new version -- BUT guess what? I get a message that tells me that I CAN'T UNINSTALL GOBACK without inserting the original disk.
So what do I do now? Is there any way that I can uninstall it without the original disk, which I have no access to? I have read several blog entries that say that you can't uninstall GoBack even if you have the disk .... but if I had it, I surely would give it a try. But I don't have it. Is there somewhere that I can obtain this .msi file? Or another way that I can uninstall so that I can install the new version that I bought last night?
Help urgently needed, please - and thanks in advance. - manaylor
The short answer is no to the MSI question. The MSI file is used to install and is on the installation media. What appears to have happened is one of a couple things:
A file associated with GoBack is missing
The History "file" partition is no longer present
The Product install references are pointing to a file or location that is missing
A component of GoBack has become corrupted
Since you no longer have GoBack hooked to your MBR we don't need to run gb_prog /u from a DOS prompt. That said, you'll need to manually uninstall GoBack at this point. The closest instructions I have are in the following document:
Erik, thanks for the fast response. I followed the instructions on the URL page to the letter, but I still have the problem (i.e.., )I can't install the new GoBack version from the new SystemWorks Standard Edition, because the previous edition apparently refuses to uninstall properly. Recall that I had already gone through the Control Panel > Remove Programs route to no avail. I was careful to substitute Symantec for Roxio when following the registry and Explorer procedures.
I noticed that the instructions in the URL apply to GoBack 3.x for Windows 98 and ME - while (as I indicated in my original post) my system is XP Pro, and the GoBack version that apparently will not uninstall properly is 4.0.0.290. Are there perhaps some other instructions that are needed for 4.x removal, with XP Pro?
This is maddening - to have purchased a new GoBack to replace the one that stopped working when I had to install a clone drive, and then not be able to load the new one despite these various removal maneuvers. Hope you have some more suggestions!
The OS won't matter completely. The difference would be some items listed might not show up. Did you restart after performing the actions? Is GoBack still listed in Add/Remove programs? I'm going to assume it is. You can use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove it from there. Be sure to restart after that. Once completed you should then be able to install the new version of GoBack. Let me know if you have any more difficulties.
Sorry for the repost, but I'm still hoping to find a solution to this problem. I've tried everything I can find in this forum and in the knowledgebase.
