I bought a new computer about 2 months ago, and it came with 180 days of norton internet security. Recently i tried to activate my trial, by opening up the norton window, and clicking {Protect now}. it doesnt work, ill just click the button and nothing will happen. No command or pop up, no response, just nothing. The buttons at the top, ie Suport, work fine. But my trial wont activate, its 180 days trial that came with the computer.
Note that if you do activate your trial version by inserting a KEY you will lose the balance of the 180 days. We get told that the Norton OnLine Customer Support are good at adding these back in but our recommendation is to wait to activate a trial version until a couple of days before the trial period ends.
Norton Trial versions are fully functional and are not crippled as security programs in any way -- they just have a built in expiry period that can be overridden when you buy a subscription.
How are you trying to Activate it? If you are doing this by using a KEY that you already have in use on other computers then it doesn't make any difference since that will be counting down from when first used. But if this is a new KEY that you bought at a good price then it does wipe out; but a new KEY does not start to count down until first used .....
There should be a line near the countdown number of days left. It should say something like Subscribe or Activate on it and there should be an area that has room to put in a key. What product are you referring to here btw? Thanks.

It does in fact show that you are NOT protected. And it also says at the bottom "Get 180 days for FREE".
This is confusing as I don't recall hearing of this type of message before. You said you had your computer for about 2 months (which is NOT 180 days). Was NIS (Norton Internet Security) working to begin with? When did you start seeing the screen you attached?
What happens if you click on the words that says "Get 180 days for FREE"? What comes up after this?
Please post a screen shot of that window also.
FYI, I noticed the IE background in back of your image. To prevent this and show just the screen which is "active" you can click on Alt + Print Screen buttons and copy just the one screen.
NOTE: I would recommend that you greatly limit your surfing or other activities online until we get this resolved. If you have another computer with active protection, then use that computer instead of this one for the time being. If you must use this computer I would recommend using it only to interact with the Norton Community here.
Given that NIS shows you are not currently protected you might wish to visit http://www.norton.com/chat and they can help you to get this resolved, perhaps more quickly than going back and forth in the forum here. Note that CHAT is the best option for the quickest response.
Hope this helps and please keep us posted on how it goes.
I was just comparing that screen shot to my NIS 2012. I am wondering if that isn't the trial version for 2011. There are many things that are different from my NIS 2012. I am wondering if the problem is that perhaps this is a trial version of NIS 2011 and not NIS 2012. I can't remember exactly what NIS 2011 looked like. I'm not sure if a trial version of NIS 2011 can still be activated if this is indeed NIS 2011. That might be the problem. The activity map and safe web icons on the bottom are different than mine are and there are a whole bunch that are missing down there.
I would try contacting the place where you purchased the computer and ask them about this activation problem and see what year this trial program is from.
If you care to post the exact make and model of your computer we can probably look up what trial it had, and maybe what conditions attach to the trial.
But personally I'd be inclined to contact the CHAT people since they have tools to check things we cannot access ....
Thanks again for all the posts; i REALLY appreciate the help!!!
-My default browser was Chrome; i set it to IE, tried again, still nothing
-When i click Account, it works fine and directs me to the norton account page, with both chrome and IE
-The computer is an HP DV-6 laptop. Bought it brand new. And excuse me, I said 2 months but it was more like 3 months ago- sorry!
-When I click [Get 180 free] then absolutely nothing happens other than that the little box goes around that veriefies that you clicked it. But nothing pops up, nothing happens.
-It is the same thing when i click the Protect Now button- Nothing happens, no pop ups, no redirection, no anything.
Thanks a lot for the alt-prtscreen tip! I appreciate it and it will definitely save me a lot of cropping-time in the future.
If it makes a difference, ive been trying to activate the trial for a month now, but didnt know there was such a great norton forum online until 4 days ago.

Hi,
No fine, no foul for not arriving here sooner Now that you have found us don't lose you way back. As mentioned before your best source of assistance is the customer support chat line forun here: http://www.norton.com/chat you may need to scroll down a bit to find the 'chat now' button. They have the tools to fix things for you. Please do report back on how it want. We'll be here and the light's always on.
Thanks for the update. So you have had the computer for about 3 months then which still does not add up to 180 days (6 months). You also said you have been trying to activate for the last month which means that it has not been working for at least that long.
What about before 1 month ago? Was it working properly before that?
I agree that under the circumstances, Customer Service CHAT is the best option.
According to the HP website, you are entitled to use their Support Assistant. It also says that NIS was customised for HP laptops and computers. I would give them a call since the service is already included in the price. Thanks.
