Can't Access Norton Removal Tool

Hi

I need a complete removal of all Norton products from my computer.

I have tried downloading the Norton Removal Tool, but everytime I click it say's it's unavailable.

My computer won't work properly until I can remove this, and I have tried literally everything for the last two days.

I am using Firefox on XP

I can't use Internet Explorer as there are issues, I think down to the Norton software on my computer.

Can anyone offer advice?

Thanks

Hi Kevin_O:

Welcome to the Norton community.

Try the generic link at www. norton.com/nrt.  If that doesn't re-deirect you to the correct support page, the direct link is here.  You should uninstall your Norton product from the Windows Control Panel (e.g., Add / Remove Programs) and re-boot your PC first before running the Norton Removal Tool (NRT) to ensure that your Symantec services are properly shut down and unhooked from your Windows OS.

I don't know what Norton product you're using but the NRT normally leaves behind a few residual files on your hard drive in C:\Program Files (e.g. C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security...) that you might need to remove manually.  If you're planning on re-installing your Norton product there are instructions here for performing a clean re-install for NIS using the NRT, and we can provide instructions for other Norton products if you need this information.

Edit:

Sorry for jumping in, PC_confused.  I didn't realize you'd already answered while I was typing my response.

Hey folks:

There appears to be something wrong with the link setup.

I tried it myself for: I have a Norton 2006/2007/2008/2009/2010/2011/2012 product

and the page came up in Portugese.

It's hit or miss.

Hi guys.

Thanks for all the swift responses.

Here's the gig.

I am not very computer savvy, and I accidently deleted an important file which meant my laptop was out of service, putting it mildly

In the end it had to be set back to Factory Settings, which included a Norton 60 day trial.

As already have protection (Kaspersky) I was in the process of downloading that again, along with all the other usual stuff I had on my laptop.

This is when the problems started.

Firstly I couldn't imput my Activation code, then when Kaspersky was running, I was unable to access the internet.

Basically I have to disable Kaspersky just to browse the net.

As a side note, when I downloaded iTunes, that wouldn't connect to the internet either.

I got in touch with Kaspersky and after i downloaded some stuff they sent me they said:

Remnants of Norton have been detected on your machine, these may cause conflict upon installation of your Kaspersky product.

Please use the Norton Uninstall Tool

Problem is, everytime I clicked the link to NUT I couldn't connect, even when I disabled Kaspersky.

I can't even connect to the internet with Internet Explorer.

Whatever the problem is with my laptop, it's not letting me download Adobe Flash either, and I suspect any other programs I may want to install. (i haven't even bothered trying yet)

I had several correspondences with Kaspersky and eventually they told me to get in touch with Norton, as I think they exausted every avenue.

BTW - I was thinking, would it be possible to download NUT onto a memory stick via another computer, then run it on my computer?

I have used Superantispyware but Kaspersky told me to unintall that, and I'm now in the process of running Malwarebytes, but as I type it has shown nothing untoward.

I'm at a loss as to what the problem is.

BTW - I'm using the latest version of Firefox, and just this minute I downloaded Opera, but like IE, it won;t connect to the internet.

Hi Kevin_O,

Let me see if I have this straight.  The only Norton you have on your system is the Trial that came with you new system?  You never physically installed any  Norton on  your system.

You have been using Kaspersky, and attempted to install that after you reverted to factory settings.  That install informed you that you needed to remove the Norton, thus you are looking for the Norton Removal Tool (NUT as you caled it).

Am I correct so far?

If you can not download the NRT via the links suggested before, please go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Norton that way.  Once unsinstalled, attempt to get the NRT, if you still can not download and the run the NRT, then attempt to install the Kaspersky again nad see if enough of the Norton haas been cleared out to at least permit you to instal Kaspersky so you at lest have some AV protection.

Let us know how you make out (if I have it right) and we can go from there.

Hi Kevin_O:

The folks at Kaspersky are correct, it's a bad idea to have have two security programs running in real-time protection mode at the same time.  We have Norton users posting all the time that residual files left on their computer by a previously installed version of AVG, Kapersky etc. interferes with their Norton product and requires an uninstaller tool or software like the Revo Uninstaller to remove these residual files.

When you check your programs installed from the Control Panel (e.g., from Add / Remove Programs), does it say that a Norton Product is installed on your PC now that you've performed the system restore?  If you can't uninstall from the Control Panel as yank suggested and you have the trial version of NIS or N360, these products come with their own firewall and a firewall reset (Settings | Network Settings | Smart Firewall | Advanced Settings | Configure | Firewall Reset | Reset) might get you back on the Internet.  You might even be able to disable the Smart Firewall (Settings | Network Settings | Smart Firewall | OFF) and then activate your built-in Windows Firewall from your Windows Security Center.

You should be able to download the Norton Removal Tool to a USB, save it to the Windows desktop of your problem computer, and then run the tool from the desktop.  For the cleanest removal it's always best to:

  1. Uninstall your Norton product from the Control Pane (answer NO if the uninstall wizard asks if you want to save any settings)
  2. Re-boot and run the NRT a few times (with a re-boot in between each clean)
  3. Re-boot and manually delete the Norton folder in C:\Program Files (e.g., C:\Program FIles\Norton Internet Security)

Hello Kevin

The problem here is using the factory restore and having a Norton 60 day trial program. When you use a factory restore, it may seem to install the 60 day trial of Norton, but the problem is that install is out of date even though it has been so called reinstalled. It may be there, but it has been damaged. If you deleted an important windows file, it is possible I think that the windows file might still be missing also. Assuming that Windows is now ok, I would suggest that you first remove Kaspersky using the control panel method and rebooting and then their removal tool. I think to get a proper uninstall of your trial Norton program, that program will have to be reinstalled properly, so that it can be properly uninstalled. After Norton is thoroughly uninstalled then, you should be able to reinstall your Kaspersky program.

Also, since it is a factory restore that was done, please make sure that you have the proper service packs installed to use to use and meet the minimum requirements of the products.

Hi,

From your posts, what I understand is that you are able to browse the internet with Kaspersky disabled, but certain downloads fail.

I think it could be some corruption with your computer's Winsock catalog.

Open Command Prompt and type the command "netsh winsock reset" and close the command prompt.

Reboot the computer.

Try to download Norton Removal Tool.

Sorry to sound like an idiot, but is Command Prompt = Start > Run ??

Hi Kevin_O:

No, the command prompt is like a pop-up window where you can run DOS commands.  From the Start menu, go to All Programs | Accessories and double-click Command Prompt (or right-click on Command Prompt and choose Run as Administrator to open an elevated command prompt if your Windows account doesn't have Administrator rights).  Then type in netsh winsock reset at the DOS  prompt (>) , hit the Enter key, and wait for the command to finish running.

Hi lmacri.

I tried that.

I think it might be worth downloading the Norton Tool onto a memory stick from another computer and see if I can run it off that.

Hi Kevin_O:

Sorry, I didn't understand your question.  I guess I was the one sounding like an idiot.:smileyvery-happy:

The Command Prompt is slightly different from the Run command in that there are certain reserved ("internal") DOS commands like "del" that can't be run from the Run command.  See the article here titled The Command Prompt in Windows for more info.

Hi Imacri

I don't think you misunderstood.

I done exactly what you suggested in your previous post, and it didn't work.

As an aside, and I might be pishing in the wind here. I can't connect to IE, so can't also update.

My comp has been returned to Factory Settings, so goes back 4 years.

This means there will be loads of Microsoft updates missing.

I'm guessing this could be a factor.

There is a Firewall factor as to why I can't access IE.

So I'm wondering how to check the firewall settings for the HTTP Port (80), HTTPS port (443), and FTP port (21) ?

Hi guys

I managed to download the Norton Removal Tool from another computer onto a Memory Stick, then run it on my computer.

And it has solved my problems.

Thanks for all the help and advice.

Kevin

Hi Kevin_O:

That's great news.  I was worried the solution wouldn't be that simple after I read your comments in message # 15 .

For future reference, if you have problems with your Windows Update or IE browser again, there are diagnostic tools in Windows XP like Check Disk (chkdsk.exe) and Scannow (scannow.exe) that can sometimes repair a minor problem with your Windows OS like a corrupted or missing system file (see here for instructions).  You should always run these diagnostic tools when Windows or IE starts misbehaving since this may save you from having to perform a system restore or full system recovery to return your system to its factory defaults.  And if you ever have to perform a system restore, make sure you disconnect from the Internet first and then disable any firewall and real-time anti-virus protection running on your computer to ensure that your security software is "unhooked" from Windows and doesn't damage your operating system during the system restore.

Be sure to post back if you uncover any futher problems caused by your system recovery.
