Can't download files

Vista 6.0, Norton 360 21.0.1.18

For the last few days I can't download many files. I managed a BBC podcast in mp3 format, which was suggested to me as a test, but I haven't been able to download a torrent, a rar file containing images, a zip file containing an ebook and an exe to install firefox which was suggested an an alternative to IE8. However I can download pictures (file - save as) and emails.

With IE8 I get the dialogue box to save the file, and at the end of the download the box disappears as if I had checked "close this box when download completes". But there is nothing in the download folder. I've also got Chrome installed, and here I get an error message "failed - virus scan failed", and that makes me wonder if a Norton setting has changed somehow.

Both NAV and MBAM report the PC as clean.

Grateful for any advice.

Hi Alan99441

As the computer is running vista the latest version for vista is IE9.

Are the error messages from Norton?

Restart the computer?

Check for Norton updates manually or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click, run live updates, and then recheck until there are no more updates restarting the computer as requested.

Check the file path is saving the download to the download folder.

If there is a loss of Internet connection on some types of download it aborts the saved data and does not show the file/folder in the download folder.

Thanks for the reply.

1) I tried downloading IE9 but it went the same way as the previous downloads - no information from IE, the message "Failed - virus scan failed" from Chrome. The NAV security history says that the file - IE9-WindowsVista-x86-enu.exe - was analysed and access was allowed, but it's nowhere to be found. Chrome's download histry says

Anti-virus software failed unexpectedly while scanning this file.

which is the same message as for all the other unsuccessful downloads.

2) The error message does not say where the virus check came from.

3) I restarted the computer but there were no changes.

4) I checked for updates and was told that there were none. According to Agent Ransack, which I use for searching in preference to Windows search, there are plenty of files in the Norton folder with today's date. Is there a way of checking that I do in fact have the most recent updates?

5) There is no loss of internet connection. In fact the smaller files take only a few seconds (not) to download - hardly long enough for the line to go down and come back again.

Hi,

If MBAM and SAS say the system is clean, assuming you are scanning with the free versions, and you are unable to scan with yoor Norton product I'm going to guess that the problem is a bit more serious. You might consider a visit to one of the free sites listed and work with a single, trained, volunteer to confirm your system is clean or to get it to that condition.
