Can't install a update NIS2009

I have two PCs running NIS 2009 one of them is experiencing this issue of Phishing updates failing the other does not. The issue has been occuring for about three weeks - maybe longer but that is when I first noticed it. I have contacted suppport through live help which was a waste of time - I ended up terminating the live help session and reinstalling the application which fixed the issue on first live update but not on subsequent live updates.

Other posts advise Symantec are aware of the issue but no ETA on resolution. Can anyone advise of when this issue will be fixed?

This forum is the best move Symantec have ever made :smileyhappy:

I was talking about the real - Symantec Support

You Know...

[ ... ]

Glad to hear Part 1 <s>

So this is the real Symantec Support -- it's here; it's new; it works.

There are still reasons for going to the other types of support (and if you'd been here since the beginning you'd know from Staff messages that they are aware of problems with Chat and they do something about specifics. And I've seen some good reports back, even yesterday, about the other Customer Support by phone/email with instances where they have quickly untangled problems users have got into finding they have lost out on existing subscriptions when updating.

Let's face it the volume of people needing support, not just for Norton products but Microsoft (how many hours on line waiting to speak to someone and losing the connection when being escalated?), is such that there will always be horror stories. So let's stick with the Good News and enjoy computing!

I have followed the instructions by Matt Powers (e-mail) and the first time all updates were installed. But after some time it went wrong and a update was not installed. For the second time I deleted WebProtectionDefs and run the reg script file and did LifeUpdate from the site of symantec and updates by the program. It seemed to be alright, but after two of three updates a update was not installed (red cross). For five minutes (Thuesday 20:00 hour Netherlands) I got a new update and everything was installed. I really don’t know what is the matter.

So are you using the Netherlands version or the US version? Is your WIndows Netherlands or US? (Which version of WIndows?)

Windows XP Home edition and NIS2009 is Dutch language. I think the problem is solved by Symantec because all the updates are installed now. I have also noticed that the 100% CPU-use is due to cidaemon.exe. How can I disable this program?

Thanks to Matt Powers and those who helped me.

I have a similar problem with Norton 360 v2.

I haven't been able to install a 616kb 'security update' file which downloads successfully but won't install.

I first experienced this about 10 days ago but as my subscription was expiring I didn't pay too much heed. When the subscription expired I uninstalled 360 (originally v1 but updated months ago to v2) and used the Norton removal tool five times to ensure nothing was left. I then installed Norton 360 v2 from a new disk (cheaper to buy a new disk than pay for a subscription renewal!) and experienced the same problem. I've now uninstalled/reinstalled Norton 360 four times, have run LiveUpdate in Intercative mode and tried everything I can think of and have read, all to no avail.

Is anyone else having similar problems and does anyone have a potential solution to this?

I have opened a new topic.

Cidaemon.exe is the Windows Indexing Service. Go to your Control Panel, than (maybe) Managment (I have hungarian windows, which is sometimes differently translated for easier use than the original english), and there is Services. In the Services find indexing, and turn it off (if you or any other software you use, like Windows Desktop Search/Live Search don’t use it), and change the start to manual.

Oké, thanks.

Hi All,

There seems to be a lot of threads about this same issue. Try using the solution here until we release the fix - http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&view=by_date_ascending&message.id=14640#M14640

Let me know if this helps.

Users of NIS2009 LiveUpdate have been experiencing failures to install some updates is not a figment of anyone's imagination.  This issue is a well documented problem internal to Symantec and unfortunately, Symantec has failed to address this paramount problem with NIS2009 in a timely manner.  Users who diligently contact Symantec online support with the anticipation of a solution are greeted with less than adequate tech support who will proceed to waste your time and in the end give you the blanket answer of "download the Norton Removal Tool and reinstall NIS2009"  Please don't waste your time doing this because the problem lies in the core of the LiveUpdate tool that is corrupting files and preventing future updates to install.  The Norton Removal Tool initially removes these corrupted files but soon you will discover after reinstalling NIS2009 that subsequent LiveUpdates will cause the problem to reoccur.  Without question, NIS2009 is the best antivirus product release from Symantec as an antivirus product and that is backed up by reviews from the industry but what a shame that Symantec failed to properly test the 'full' product and ruin this terrific Norton tool. Whomever is responsible for overall quality assurance on this product release needs to be put through their own quality assurance process and reassigned.  For those of us IT professionals who has support the Norton AntiVirus software for many years and have waited patiently for years for a new antivirus engine and related support tools, this has been a painful experience with our customer base.  Symantec ... PLEASE move this issue to the top of your priority critical action agenda.

symantec are aware of this problem and are working on a Fix.

I would suggest waiting for a few hours and then run Norton LiveUpdate, Manually.  Have you done this and, if so, did it install?
