Can't install my NIS

Hi!

I can't install Norton Internet Security (NIS) on my laptop. It's for three computers and is already installed on two laptops, one of them exactly like the one in which I can't install it. When I insert the CD, a Norton' screen appears and I press the option "Install Norton Internet Security", the User Account Control asks me permission to go ahead and I press OK, but then appears a window which says "There is a problem that needs attention: NIS will not install in compatibility mode. Close this window and restart the installer in normal mode. " I went to the support website and followed the steps:

'
1 - Start Internet Explorer.
2 - On the Tools menu, click Windows Update.
3 - Follow the instructions on the screen to install all available updates for your operating system.
4 - Install your Norton product.
'

I installed the updates and as it appeared the same message when trying to install NIS again, I went to the next step:

'
Run the installer in normal mode.
Make sure you are not running the Norton product installer in compatibility mode.
1 - Click the right mouse button on the installation file you downloaded Norton product and then click Properties.
2 - On the Compatibility tab, under compatibility mode, uncheck Run this program in compatibility mode for.
3 - Install your Norton product.
'

But the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" was unselected, so as there was no more solutions I don't know what to do, and the help chat doesn't work.

To make sure that the problem is not the CD of NIS (for example, that it was defective and therefore could not be installed on three computers but only two), I used the CD on a desktop computer and I followed the steps as if to install it, and then it gives me the option to insert the product key and install, so the CD is fine (but I haven't installed it because on that computer don't need antivirus).

I bought NIS in November 2012 for a new laptop, but I bought it for three computers cause I knew I'd need to install it on the other two laptops. On Thursday January 17 I installed it on the laptop that is like the one in which I can't install it, and on Friday I tried to install it in this last one but couldn't.

I don't know if it's important but twice, just when I opened the window that appears when I press to "Install Norton Internet Security" (which tells that you can not install the NIS and whose exact message I've written before), it appeared a message saying something about supply administrator's permission to continue the installation or something like this, but as I say it appeared only twice and although I continued trying to install it several times , it didn't appeared again, so I can't reproduce exactly what it said and I do not know if it was related whit NIS.

Hope you can help me, thank you very much!

Hi, esther217,

Sorry to see you're having issues installing your Norton Product.  Which Version of N.I.S. are you trying to install?  You can find this information under "Support" > "About" > "Version".

Have you had a previous Norton Internet Security product on your system?  If so, you may want to run the Norton Removal Tool; this will make sure that you're getting a clean install.  You may want to run the N.R.T. anyway to make sure that you are indeed getting a Clean Install. If you've had any other Security Product on your system apart from Norton, then you will need to run their removal tool; please let us know if this is the case.

Please let us know how you get on with this.

Edit:

Please try to run the install as "Run As Adminstrator" first before proceeding with these instructions I listed above.  If you can provide us with the Version you are trying to install, I can provide details on how to do this via Download as I'm not too sure how to do this via the C.D. as I don't use a lot of C.D. installs.

Start/Windows Button > Computer > Devices with Removable Storage > Right-Click on your C.D. > Run As Administrator.

Hi esther217,

Are you running Windows Vista?  You can sometimes get this error when trying to install Norton on a Vista operating system that does not have any service packs installed.  Vista Service Pack 1 is a minimum requirement, although you should actually update the OS to Service Pack 2 to be current.

Do you now or have you ever had another security program on your computer? If so, you will have to remove it with the removal tool for that program.

Hi! I've tried to run as administrator without exit, and then I tried the Norton Removal Tool but I can't install anyway.

Last year I had the Norton 360, but this year I have the Norton (by Symantec) Internet Security. This is the version, I think, because in the box there are the names of three versions (Norton 360, Norton Antivirus and then my version: Norton Internet Security).

I'm running Windows Vista, so I'll try to install the Service Pack 2 that SendOfJive said.

I'll tell you, thanks!

If you have not already done so, log into Windows with an admimister account. Then try to run the Norton Removal Tool from here   www.norton.com/nrt  Reboot your computer and again log in as an admin.

Now log into your Norton Account at www.account.norton.com   and click on the Download button beside your current subscription. This should download and install a preactivated copy of your product.

Let us know if this helps.
