Can't login to router on 192.168.1.1

Hi,

I have Norton 360 Version 5.1.0.29 on a home computer running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit edition.

I have recently installed a new D-Link 2740B wireless modem/router and for some reason after initially having no issues, I am now unable to login to the units web GUI on 192.168.1.1 on IE9 or Firefox. Neither can "Display the Page." Therefore I can't get in to make any changes to the settings.

I took the modem to a friend's house and he had no trouble logging in to 192.168.1.1 via IE.

He pointed the finger at Norton 360 doing something to deny access on my computer.

I can ping 192.168.1.1 and I have internet access. I just can't login to the modems web GUI.

Can someone assist?

(P.S. I don't know if it's anything to do with this, but looking into Norton's My Network > Network Security Map it said the modem was "OFFLINE". I removed it from the map and tried to add it back in but now it refuses to let me do so, saying the IP address 192.168.1.1 is already in the network. I purged the whole network and it re-scanned, but again did not show the modem. Tried to add it in again, same result, said 192.168.1.1 already part of network. How do I get it to show up in the network map again and have the status "ONLINE"?)

Hi delphinium and thanks for your time.

I followed all your suggestions and the router is now not showing in the network map. I reset the Norton Firewall and the router and rebooted. There are no additional devices in Windows Printers & Devices. Automatically detect settings is checked in Internet Options.

Result - no change.

IE & Firefox still can't see the router/modem on 192.168.1.1.

I've tried disabling Norton Firewall & Antivirus and that didn't seem to make any difference either. When I then went to Windows Firewall to make sure it was also off it said that it was being controlled by Norton 360.

How can I see definitely if it is Norton 360 causing the problem?

Please go to your network and sharing settings, right click on your network connection and click on your network connection.  Click details and then check the default gateway address and the subnet mask.

If you disable the firewall and it makes no difference, it is likely to be something else that is causing the problem.  If you drop the firewall and can make the connection then it is more likely to be at least part of the issue.

At this point in time, it is just tedious troubleshooting.  I'm thinking that your default gateway address has changed for whatever reason.

Default Gateway definitely 192.168.1.1 as per what you suggested checking and ipconfig.

When I disable Norton Smart Firewall & Anti-Virus Auto Protect does that mean the Windows Firewall has been dropped also?

When I check it just says it is being controlled by Norton and I don't get an option to turn it off separately.

Hi BigBad64,

In Windows 7, having a third party firewall installed disables the Windows firewall completely.  Turning off the Norton firewall does not cause the Windows firewall to become enabled, so in your situation, all you need to do is to disable the Norton firewall.

Searching online, I see that the documentation for your router includes a Troubleshooting section that begins with the question:  "Why can't I access the web-based configuration utility?"  It offers many steps you might try.

I've been through all of those steps about 3 times to no avail.

Anyway, at least I've established it's not Norton 360 preventing access, though it's frustrating not knowing what is.

It looks like I'll have to connect the modem to anothyer computer to make changes.

Thanks for the assists.

Hi,

My router is at 192.168.0.1 could this be the answer?

Try adding the router address to your Trusted Sites in IE.  If you use NoScript in Firefox, allow the router.

Go into the windows 7 network and sharing center and make sure the network is setup as a Home network.

Dave

Thanks for the suggestion.

ipconfig says Default gateway definitely 192.168.1.1.

This site made a Trusted Site in IE.

Network set as Home Network.

Still no joy.

Hi,

If you open a browser and type in 192.168.1.1 do you get the router login screen?

No, I get "Ïnternet Explorer Cannot Display The Page".

Problem solved.

I simply deleted the browsing history and it let me log straight in, simple as that.

Thanks to everyone for trying to assist, much appreciated.

Now I don't have to get any more of these painful CAPTCHA word verifications right. What a painful way to post!

Thanks for getting back and letting us know.  What a frustrating experience with such a simple fix!
